The way it was explained by my cardiologist, "a sudden release of adrenaline every minute which cause the heart to pound and saves your life, takes its' toll."

The good news is that if you can learn to sleep through that, you can learn to sleep with PAP.

You start with the garden verity fixed pressure cpap that the labs set up, it is the best treatment for 90% of SDB.
Then there is the auto titrating cpap that is generally recommended by insurance companies that don't want to pay for a second night in the lab, after the first diagnosis. These machine are far too often just set on 4-20 and the patent sent home.
The ASV that you mentioned is for brain disordered breathing, it isn't need that often.
