Woke up catching a little breath.

Post by WarpedTrekker » Sat Jan 20, 2018 5:52 pm

I've been using APAP since August 2017. Diagnosed also with tachycardia, panic disorder, and AFIB that month. My doctor put me on medicine for AFIB, after that one occurrence, and it seems to also be controlling my tachycardia and panic attacks as well, most of the time.

I'm calling my doctor on monday so he can review the data, but I'm sure he will say all is good with AHI <5. He has told me in the past I don't need to worry about CA's and that what he saw was of no concern. But clearly the machine is reporting some CA's.

I woke up around 7am, and having to catch my breath a little bit. Didn't know what to think about that. First time it has happened while on APAP.
My pressure is 6-13, with EPR 3 Full time. Can anyone tell from this data, what is going on around 7am?

Welcome to the forum.
Your numbers look OK. It is likely that those CA's you highlighted all likely not true CA. Zoom in at the events just shy of 6AM. We need to see about 5 minutes.

Your CAs are insignificant...If you had an AHI of 10 and most were clustered CAs, I would look closer at them. In your case ...forget about it. At the 6;00-7:00 hour you were most likely starting to awaken and were moving around a lot. This sometimes causes Clear Airway events...you may hold your breath while turning over, but the machine cannot determine a blockage.

I woke up last night catching my breathe and I looked at my watch. Looked at sleepy head this morning and at that exact time I had a hypopnea. You did too in your data. In betting that's all it was . Next time it happens check time again then data .
Good luck!

Here is the screenshots from just before 6am of those events. From what I see, it shows that my Insp.Time during those events was around 5-7 seconds. I'm not sure what to make of it, except that is a long time to breathe in one breath.

Thanks for posting the image. I am not an expert in CA or SWJ but I will tell you what I don't see. I don't see a decrease in flow prior to the event. After the event I see no gasping for air. That tells me that the event means nothing. The question I ask myself when reviewing my own data is: if I were awake and breathed exactly like the chart shows, would I find it disturbing?

Since you asked about 7AM, take a closer look at that region.

Looks about the same to me at 7pm. Insp.Time goes up, Resp.Rate goes down, Mask pressure and flow rate goes flat. What should I be exactly looking at, to determine if those CA are actually real or not, or serious or not? If mask pressure and flow rate goes flat, that means I wasn't breathing?

If I zoom in during one of the CA events, it shows the pulsating wave of the CSA detector that Resmed machine creates to detect CA's.

I guess I'll see what my sleep doctor says this week, after he reviews the data.

They do not look very bad. Yes - they show that you stop breathing for a little over 10 sec. But that is not very long. And there is no large gasping for air afterwards which means that the event did not cause distress. It is normal to have some CA when we sleep. They are very common when we are awake, rolling over, drifting in and out of sleep. Breathing is very irregular when we are not in deep sleep. The machine does not know anything about sleep.

Here is a great thread viewtopic.php?f=1&t=113409&st=0&sk=t&sd=a#p1094245

My guess is that your doctor will continue to tell you that they should be ignored. Let us know. Thanks

They appear to be "real" to me but maybe they are just a nice normal sleep onset central happening.
Seem to show up in those wee hours of the morning where we usually have more REM and with REM it is common to wake after REM.
Then with the wake up comes another transition to sleep which in turn increases the chance for a sleep onset central.
A lot of maybes I know but not impossible maybes.

See what the doc says this week. More for your peace of mind given your history of cardiac issues than anything else though.
