Hello all! New user to the cpap world. I’ve been on my Cpap for about 4 days now and I can already feel some difference. I had a quick question Incase we had any airline pilots out there.
I’m 32, Went to the ENT doctor back in October due to really bad snoring... (Wife complaining it was really bad). I tried every mouth guard and gadget out there and nothing worked. I might be about 10-15 pounds over weight for my height. He took a glance at my throat and said I’d probably have Mild-Severe sleep apnea. So, I did the sleep study and only had about 5 events an hour, so he put me on the Auto machine with a range of 5-15. He said it was just very mild sleep apnea. Haven’t snored sense... I’m actually even feeling better, even my mood is starting to change, so I’m hoping it keeps going that way.
Anyway, back to the original topic... I have a current first class medical. I called the doctor we have through the union and he said I’d have to ground myself until I have enough data to prove to the FAA that I was in compliance, I think he said about a weeks worth... So, I turned around and called my AME I go see every year, and he said “Absolutely not, you no longer have to ground yourself. You just bring the diagnoses from the ENT Dr, and your cpap recordings next time you come see me and I’ll give you a Special Issuance first class medical”. So.... I got conflicting info. Anyone have any stories that go with what he said? Thanks for any direction you can give me.
Any U.S Airline Pilots here?
Re: Any U.S Airline Pilots here?
Not a pilot. And not sure if this is current, since things are always changing, but the following overview may give you some idea:

The AME, as I understand it, may, or may not, elect to take responsibility. You may have to move up the ladder from the union drone/doc you spoke with to make sure it all squares with the union, though. It is their job to have your six on this stuff.

Some of these links are a little dated, but some (like FAA.GOV below) have some current info.
