How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
100% compliance for last 30 days with average use time of 8 hours and 36 minutes on CPAP. Average AHI during this time is 1.1 .
I just got the notes on my overnight oximetry test from last week so I don't have all the data.
Total record time was 9 hours and 23 minutes. 93 minutes spent under 88% and 55.8% of night I was under 90%.
I haven't talked to Dr so hopefully they call me in next couple days. I assume supplemental oxygen is needed at this point when o sleep? The VA sometimes moves slow so how fast should I be pushing them on this?
Thanks

Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
Probably pointless question, but were you on cpap that night?

Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
I would assume just a slight rise in min. pressure would be needed... certainly not 02. Having an isolated moment of low sat. is not a reason to put someone on supp. oxygen. Many more things need to be explored before that would come up.

What would raising the minimum pressure do to increase my oxygen levels?Julie wrote:I would assume just a slight rise in min. pressure would be needed... certainly not 02. Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
I doubt very much if 3 hyponeas over the entire night is responsible for your lower than desired oxygen levels.
I suspect that it isn't related to OSA and wouldn't matter what pressure you used.
And somehow I don't think
93 minutes spent under 88% and 55.8% of night I was under 90%
qualifies as isolated moment
I wonder if Julie saw the results you posted.

From now on I won't try to make sense of the graphs... apparently got it wrong - sorry.

Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
As to how bad is it?
Well it's not horribly bad but it's significant. I think with Medicare the requirement is 5 minutes (or something in that neighborhood) under 88% will get them to pay for home oxygen.
Your daytime awake O2 is also a bit lower than normal.
You don't live at a high altitude do you? I forget.
Have you been having morning headaches?
Your OSA seems to be very well treated so that along with awake lower than normal levels points to probably something else going on.
Are they going to be doing other stuff to try to figure out what is causing it and not just adding the O2?

Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
According to the internet my elevation is roughly 450 feet.
I get lots of head aches not just in morning. Usually my sp02 when awake is 93 ish and sometimes if I take deep breaths I can get it up around 97 or 98 .
Haven't talked to anyone about results yet. I went to release of records and got them that way. I also went to patient advocate because my primary care team can be slow on things so she personally brought the results over to nurse manager for my Dr who hopefully is there tomorrow.
Also here is info from original sleep study that shows I dropped into the 80's while awake as well.

According to my research VA guidelines will have them start me on 2 liter 02 (whatever measurement it is) .
I am definitely going to push to find the cause. I'm really glad I bought a pulse oximeter and said something. I just want to feel normal again.

Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
Will be interesting to see if the headaches reduce or go away with the addition of the oxygen.
Your situation is a bit different from mine since my OSA was the main culprit for my low O2 (73% during my sleep study) I was having daily massive headaches from the imbalance in the gases. One of the first things that went away was the killer headaches once I got my cpap therapy optimal.
It will be nice if your headaches go away also. It's just fatiguing to have chronic pain of any kind...wears you out even if everything else is going well.
Been there, done that and have the T shirt myself. I will cross my fingers and toes that it helps with the headaches.
If it doesn't then that's just another thing that will need more detective work.

Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
Luckily my headaches aren't super severe or debilitating. Just annoying which I can deal with.
I am just still so tired. Also I think it says something when people I work with notice and even told me I am getting dumber LOL. I'm still not thinking as well or capable of multitasking like I even was 3 months ago.
I'm really hoping that they give me oxygen and that it helps as well as I have read it does for a lot of people. Then I hope to get the cause figured out and hopefully corrected so I don't need the oxygen anymore. It's honestly worrisome. I'm only 33.

Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
When they did my titration, any pressure between 8 and 11 brought my oxygen level to 91%. More than that would not have made any difference. So increasing pressure doesn't necessarily increase your oxygen level if your problem is not limited to apnea.
I'm fairly certain you would meet the Medicare requirement for supplemental oxygen.

Re: How bad do I need supplemental oxygen?
You can change it later. Try the min pressure on 9, that is just under what a fixed pressure would be. It may help the o2, or show you you need to get back to the doctor if there is no change.

Try raising your min pressure. When doing basic bilevel respiratory therapy, you raise epap to increase oxygenation.USMCVet wrote:100% compliance for last 30 days with average use time of 8 hours and 36 minutes on CPAP. Average AHI during this time is 1.1 .
