Stop breathing when using my BiPAP and trying to fall asleep

Post by candigrl63 » Wed Jan 10, 2018 8:19 am

I'm new to this. I have a BiPAP machine. Pressure 4 / 8. The problem I'm having is the same one I had at the Sleep Center. Right before I'm about to drift off I stop breathing and this wakes me up. I don't have this problem without the BiPAP machine. I had a sleep study at a Sleep Center. Diagnosed with 15.9 ahi.. I don't know what to do. I need to be successful because I have heart failure from not previously using CPAP machine for years. But if a BiPAP machine is going to make it worse I don't know what to do. Anyone else experienced this. I have Osa.

Exactly which BiPap machine are you using and exactly what settings are you using?.....there's more to bipap settings than 4/8 pressure.

You need to use some available software to see what is happening when you are dropping off to sleep.

You might be having what is called a sleep onset central and while they normally aren't a problem for most people they can be a problem for some depending on how many and if they are bouncing a person out of sleep all night long. Let's look at your software reports...assuming you are using a recent model bilevel device they all will flag centrals.

I try to post a reply to the reply I got but I don't know how to do it. I press submit and nothing happens. I have a ResMed aircurve 10 V Auto. I don't know what other numbers to give. It has an auto ramp at 30 minutes but when I wearing the BiPAP machine at night watching TV I don't notice a difference in the high-pressure. It's just always the same. the pressure goes down when I exhale up when I inhale. I'm afraid this Central apnea will make my heart failure worse or kill me. I don't know what to do. I am diagnosed with Osa

I don't know that you are having central apneas as in sleep onset centrals. I just said it was a possibility.
You have a good machine...lets use it and see for sure what is happening when you go to sleep.

There's more to the settings than what you are seeing ....so lets get you the clinical manual for your machine so you can learn how to go into the settings area of your machine and see what all the settings are.

Go here and request the manual...get the clinical manual....it has a lot more information in it than the typical user manual.

SleepyHead will work well with the AirCurve 10 VAuto...
Let's see what (if anything) it is flagging when you are nodding off to sleep.

Hi candigrl63,
I had what you describe when I first started. I believe it was because I was concentrating on my breath which I could hear in my mask.
What help was a fairly noisy fan to provide white noise so I couldn't hear my breathing.
I wasn't worrying about it at the time, but sometimes it was annoying, it would take about 10 cycles before I would get to sleep.
I think I still do it but I don't notice, and it takes the first try.
I think that if you try what Pugsy suggests it will help put your mind at ease.
Using weight loss, general exercise, and tongue/throat exercises I managed to get my AHI down to approx 5.
Not using a machine currently.
