still sleepy during day

Post by littlemenace » Wed Dec 13, 2017 1:03 pm

Hi, I have been using the dream station by Philips since the beginning of March of this year. All my levels are within normal limits. My problem is, I still get sleepy during the day, I cannot keep awake when I am not active, I cannot watch the TV, do a puzzle book, read nor use my laptop without falling asleep. As I fall asleep, I twitch and jerk my arms, head and even my tummy which in turn wakes me up again. I also do this when I am laying in bed going to sleep during the night. I wake up early in the mornings around 3 o'clock and then only cat nap until I get up. I am getting roughly around 7 hours of sleep on a good night but I still do not wake up feeling refreshed. My mother informs me that while I am sleeping my head is always on the move as well as my legs. I have spoken to my GP about my sleepiness during the day and he puts it down to having many years of sleep deprivation, I do not think this is the reason though, I feel like I am banging my head up against a brick wall.

Do you take any medications of any kind...if so what?
Any other health issues going on that could mess with sleep quality?

So you get approx 7 hours of sleep but it is highly fragmented after 3 AM...lots of wake ups...what time do you usually go to bed?
Approx how many known wake ups?

The leg movement...might want to read up on PLMD Periodic limb movement disorder
It may or may not be part of the wake up issue or the daytime sleepiness issue if it is messing with your sleep.

Back when you had your sleep study was it a home study or did you have it in a sleep lab setting?

Did you have an in-lab sleep study? Leg movements would have shown up on the equipment, and the technicians should have observed head movements and made a note. PLMD is one possibility for your problems.

Please do follow up with answers to the questions in prior posts. If you had a lab study, I'd be interested in the exact wording in the report regarding limb movements. And what meds or supplements you are on.

The medication I take I have been on for serval years now. I take anxiety meds and anti depression meds, meds for diabetes. My test was done at home. I usually get into bed around 9.15 pm and read until about 10 pm then I settle to go to sleep. Some nights it takes longer to go to sleep usually about once a week it can be very hard to fall asleep. I haven't actually counted how many wake ups but the timing is around 2 hours until I get up.

Look closely at your medications for potential side effects that could make the daytime sleepiness worse and mess with sleep architecture...causing the wake ups to be more numerous.

Anti depression meds are notorious for causing drowsiness and messing with sleep architecture and even keeping a person out of some of the needed sleep stages. Read up on SSRI and SNRI meds and sleep...lots of potential unwanted symptoms.
Not saying that they are the sole cause of your problem but maybe those side effects piled on top of not sleeping well just because the mask is on the face is enough to create a worse problem.

Fragmented sleep for any reason will totally trash our sleep quality and make us feel like crap during the day.
The every 2 hour cycle...probably related to REM stage sleep maybe. It's common to wake after a REM cycle and most of us don't remember it because the awake time is so brief but some people do become fully awake and have difficulty falling back to sleep and that makes it sleep maintenance insomnia.
So google sleep maintenance insomnia a read up on potential culprits.

Your meds may not be the sole cause of the problem but they sure aren't doing you any favors.

Pressure Settings - not how high at a given time your pressure went one night, but what are the scripted setting numbers?

Have you discussed this with your doctor?

Do you have the capability of filming yourself during sleep so those movements your mother described can get a closer look, short of a lab study? If you have PLMD your movements should have some identifying markers. Would be interesting to see them here and it could help your doctor determine if they merit a lab study. Some meds can actually cause extra movements, and not necessarily of PLMD category. Is your dosage of your meds the same as before you started CPAP? We've seen reports here of people's dosage needs changing with CPAP treatment. Please do talk to your doctor about any med changes. With some meds it is critical to step down dosing in a carefully calculated, protracted, and monitored effort.
