Is Nausea Common with Sleep Apnea?

Post by MrsRinPDX » Mon Dec 11, 2017 2:34 am

Hello All,
I was reading another post and it mentioned that their nausea returned. This unexplained problem has plagued me for years but is improving with my BiPAP use. My question is, Is nausea a symptom of sleep apnea? Could I have found the key? Many thanks!

Is your question related to 'treated' or 'untreated' sleep apnea? Either way I can't remember nausea being a symptom for me.

It's not normally related, but if someone is prone to a 'symptom' of any kind it is possible they'll feel better with more oxygen in their system. However I suggest you see your MD about the nausea for its own sake - haven't you ever done that?

Thanks for your reply. I have mentioned it to my doctor, and he seems to shrug it off as something not to be concerned with. I don't have pain anywhere else to go with it. Of course, it is pretty uncomfortable for me.

Hi MrsRinPDX,

If nausea continues to be an issue and your doctor keeps blowing you off, you might want to consider seeking another opinion.

When I experienced nausea during chemotherapy, I found ginger candies to be very helpful. If you're concerned about the sugar content, I remember seeing sugar free ones as an option.

You could also try making ginger tea or purchasing it if the candies don't appeal to you as a solution. I never tried it but I read an article on a mainstream site that showed it might be helpful in alleviating nausea.

Best of luck.

You didn't tell us at what time of the day or night (or all the time) the nausea was occurring.

Also, we don't know what medications you may have been taking.

But, if it's improving, that's definitely a good sign.

A Google search on "nausea and sleep apnea" brought up a few links.

Thanks Den. I did the google search as suggested and sleep deprivation can cause nausea. It's been happening at all hours of the day and night, so I highly doubt it is related to anything I eat or don't eat, or meds I take. I just never thought of myself as sleep deprived. I guess I'm having a "duh" moment.

Untreated sleep apnea can affect our lives (and health) in ways we have trouble imagining.
Searching the Internet and this forum (Search function above) can be very beneficial to find answers to many questions.
There's alot of information in the archives of this forum.

I never experienced prolonged nausea before CPAP and neither have I experienced it afterward. On a few RARE occasions when I was nauseated at night, I have avoided using CPAP lest I become strangled if vomiting occurred. I have never in my 30 years of CPAP felt that the machine was a cause of nausea.
