Issue staying asleep

Post by hotfuzz » Thu Nov 30, 2017 11:29 am

Hey all,

Just this week I have been having an issue staying asleep. I wake up anywhere from 2-3 hours after I fall asleep and cannot get back to sleep. The fatigue is getting rough and I can't seem to figure it out.

I have been sleeping with a cpap for almost 5 years now. When I was diagnosed with OSA I was 27, my AHI was 28 and longest even was 9 seconds. I have a s9 elite and mirage FX mask, all of which I have used from the start. I run 7 pounds of pressure and according to my machine my AHI is 0.9, ramp is off, I do not have any trouble falling asleep. I run my mask fairly snug and when I wake up it isn't a leakage issue.

Any and all ideas would help and are appreciated!

Any change in medications...adding new meds or changing dosage on old meds?

Anything that might have changed in your life that could be a potential culprit for the sleep maintenance insomnia? Pain? Stress? etc??

I have been going through a similar battle lately myself. Very frustrating trying to figure out who the culprit might be.

What has changed in your life. I find worry to keep me awake, not very productive as we can't change what we worry about or fear usually. I used to sleep sound on XPAP, now a couple of good night followed a couple of short bad ones. It may be a case of too much time in bed, body getting caught up. Still get sleepy after dinner watching T.V., may be digestion and a reaction to the high dose of insulin I take to cover it. I just accept it for what it is, I'm getting older. Jim

Do you keep your bedroom cool? I sometimes have a similar problem but invariably it's because I've gotten too warm under the duvet and either changing it, or the room temp. helps, tho' I don't have a problem going back to sleep.

Cold 65 degrees, lots of covers (Electric) if needed. Jim

This seems to have come on suddenly? I second the idea to think through what has changed lately.

And here is a checklist to run through.
- Practice good sleep hygiene (Google it and read several sources)
- Eat a good diet
- Have a regular, moderate exercise program
- Try to avoid daytime naps
- Practice total abstinence of caffeine including sources like chocolate (sigh)
- Review all medicines, vitamins and supplements you are taking to make sure none are interfering with sleep
- Use the bedroom for sleeping (and sex) only, and make sure the bedroom and bed are comfortable.
- Learn to appropriately handle emotional stress in your life
- Do not listen to your breathing or the sound of the machine as you are falling asleep.
- Distract your mind by thinking of a pleasant, relaxing activity that you enjoy. Thinking of sitting under an umbrella on a quiet beach with a warm gentle breeze works for me.
- Use CPAP software, such as the free SleepyHead, to make sure your therapy is optimized
- If you still don't feel or sleep well, make sure you have regular medical checkups to confirm there are no other medical problems

Thanks all for the advice.

Nothing has changed that I know of, no medication changes, not routine changes, stress level hasn't changed. We keep our bedroom around 60-62 I also forgot to mention I am 32.

Well, your football team has lost the last two games, and the basketball team has lost three of the last four.

So in essence you haven't identified the arousal stimulus that wakes you up? You don't think it's CPAP related because you use to sleep well and nothing's changed. Perhaps you could get some clue as to what's going on if you got one of these sophisticated sleep stage monitoring devices.

Another member recently suggested the "Aura sleep system" as well as the Oura ring. (two different companies and styles. The Aura is a pad the goes under the mattress, while the Oura is a ring/fitness/sleep tracker.

I would have to care about sports first.

I'll look into the sleep trackers, I also read on here about someone using an O2 sensor on their wrist through the night. That might show something as well, as long as it isn't too expensive. If it doesn't resolve itself by the end of the week, I'll go see my doctor. I'm due for a physical anyway.

Thank you all again.

O2 sensor on finger, not wrist.

I think I was the one who mentioned a recording oximeter....search Amazon for CMS50F (<$90) the device works very well but the user manual is next to useless.

The sensor is on the finger, but the recording computer is worn like a wristwatch.

For a 32-year old with healthy lungs, this is a waste of money and time. Use Sleepyhead instead - look at the individual breath waveforms that occur just before you have a premature awakening.

It might tell you something, but it won't tell you why you have an awakening.

Are you using Sleepyhead? Put your effort there.

Me too -have issues staying asleep. Thinks its nerves wondering--will the mask leak--will it slip--will the hose strangle me? That type of stuff.
