Amara View - nose numbness

Post by dfruiterman » Tue Nov 28, 2017 3:23 pm

Has anyone using the Amara View mask experienced any numbness in the tip and the underside of the nose?

It took me a long time to get the Amera view to fit correctly. During part of the fitting I had it to tight and would wake in the morning with the tip of my nose sore. the best way i have found for me to fit it now is every night i disconnect it from the hose. plug the holes with my thumb (main input) and index finger(vent) and blow air into mask. This allowed me to find the sweet spot on my face. Then I loosened the straps up as much as possible to still keep that seal. now i have not had that problem and it is the most comfortable mask i have tried.

Yep. I loosened the top straps a little bit and that pretty much eliminated it. A very fine line between comfort and leaks though.
Good Luck.

@bigdave36

You had soreness or numbness? I’ve been using the mask for about 3 months and it just started. I think I had it tighter recently.

Yep, The tip of my nose would be sore every morning for the first 8 months of using this mask. Since I had finally controlled the leaks I had just decided to accept it, till I saw a post here about still getting a good seal with a looser mask. I played with it a bit and boom...no more soreness in the morning. It was the last of many problems I have had with the Amara View. Try to be patient, its not an easy mask , but I don't think any of them are.

Besides a small sore right inside my nostril, I’ve had no soreness...just numbness.

Not really numb, but it feels like I have a large zit inside my nostril sometimes. So I guess sore?

I've just been switched to an Amara View, ...one week now. Very uncomforatble....!!
I, too, have noticed a sore nose/nostril. It fades after leaving my bed in the morning.

Like others, I've experienced difficulties with this mask. Trying to get it properly and comfortably adjusted continues to be a problem. Provider gave me a Large mask to try tonight, along with advice to increase my humidity settings.

I continue to have real difficulty with dry mouth. Switching to this modified FFM mask was supposed to reduce that problem...???
When I get to the point where I'm relaxing and about to fall asleep, I'll get a leak inside the mask and thru my lips that quickly fills my oral cavity. Inflates me like a balloon.

I've also been awakened, finding the lower edge of the mask, that is supposed to be resting on my chin, ....actually up between my lips. You can imagine the massive air leak that accompanies that awkward situation. .....yet another awakening.

It was the dry mouth with my Dreamwear and the associated awakenings that prompted me to head back to the Dr for some assistance.
I'm not pleased with his latest suggestion. I'm ready to abandon this ship and head back to Dreamwear.....

I get a sore nose but I love that mask rather than the full face ones. I got a small cushion and I think it may be too small, so I just ordered a medium one, since my nose fits right to the end of the cushion and sometimes the holes for the nostrils get misaligned so my nose is blocked. I have very little leaking with it compared to the FFMs.

Might try my FFM, it has pillows and covers the mouth.

Try lowering your pressures.
I've been using my Amara View for about a couple of months and it works brilliantly for me, however I agree that it takes a bit of perseverance to get it adjusted correctly. I was getting a lot of leaks initially, achieving very low AHI but that's no good if sleep is disrupted too often. Making some positional and strap adjustments helped a little but still not quite right.
My Eureka moment was when I realized that this mask was smaller than a regular FFM so probably required less pressure, so I lowered my lower and upper pressures by 1.0 and that has reduced the leakage enough for me to get a good night's sleep. And my AHI is still much lower than it has ever been.
Good luck!

No mask should ever cause numbness, pain, skin abrasions, blisters, sores...if they do then it is either improperly fitted, the wrong size or simply the wrong mask for a particular face.

Numbness....something is too tight somewhere for some reason or other. Numbness is caused by the nerves being compressed and just a light touching of something to the face shouldn't be compressing the nerves to the point of causing numbness.

You're right Pugsy, but I think that the automatic reaction to leaks for most people is to tighten things up to stop them, that just introduces other issues. I tend to lay on my back for a minute or so after fitting the mask and allow it to fully inflate before taking up my sleeping position.
Having the right pillow also makes a big difference, I use a buckwheat pillow so that I can shape it exactly how I want it. I tried one of those contoured memory pillows for a few nights and it just kept pushing my mask out of place.
I'm sure though that people don't always change their pressures to suit a different type of mask, I remember you telling me that changing from a nasal mask to FFM I may need to increase pressure so the opposite is also true.

I was switched to an Amara View mask today from an AirFit F10 and I'm glad I'm not alone in finding it difficult to fit at high pressures. Reading the other posts gives me hope that with some tenacity I will eventually find the sweet spot. But in the mean time, what a pain.

I used the Amara View when my pressure was running 20 cm and higher. It can be a little difficult to get it to seal.
