Resmed S9 Face wash

Post by Btoeps74 » Fri Nov 10, 2017 11:52 am

It took me a while to fall asleep using CPAP, but once I did, love it. But now something is wrong. It is fine initially when going to sleep but at random times I wake up to water spraying me in the face along with the water gurgling in the hose. I can physically see the water coming up and out of the canister. I never fill it up past the line and have even tried just filling it half way and even a quarter of the way.

And when it does that, air can't escape fast enough through the designated spot on the mask which then causes excess air to push out through the silicone cushion area. I didn't check, but am pretty sure that it is blowing harder than the highest setting of 20.

Some basics that may get asked, I never use the ramp feature. It is the autoset model. Full face mask with a new cusion (Issue did start before new cushion).
Even when my machine acts up, I still get a smiley face for mask leaks so I don't think leakage is a issue. I checked the filter which was in fact off and laying on the floor. Not sure how long it has been running like that but issues remained after replacing.

Thanks in advance and hope to hear this is fixable.

Rainout is common, especially as temperatures fall in the winter months. It's just condensation from your humidifier. Look for a snuggle hose, available on amazon or cpap.com -- completely eliminated rainout for me. I got the 8ft one to cover my 6ft hose and the short hose of my mask with a single piece.

Look at that maximum fill line on the side of the tank.
It is there to prevent what you have experienced.
NEVER fill above that line--ever!
If you need more water before morning, add it when needed.
If you see water climbing out of the tank, please consider skipping the nightcap.

Water gurgling in the hose and hitting you in the face just means the moist air from your humidifier is condensing when it hits the cold hose. You need to warm up the hose with something wrapped around it (or better yet, use a heated hose). Also make sure your machine is well below the level of your head. Mask leak may be a result of the "rainout" but it's not the cause.

That is very strange. Even if you have your machine above the level of your head (Which you shouldn't.), I can't imagine how this would happen.

Rainout commonly came up during searches but I am confident that is not the problem particularly because of the amount of air being pushed into my mask and darn near being pushed off my face. The mask almost feels like a military hovercraft hovering over my face when it's ramped up out of control.

And as I said, when it wakes me up, I flip on the night stand light where I have it and look in the viewing window and can see the water getting siphoning out of the reservoir almost like a garden hose with one of those fertilizer spray attachments.

I also know my issue isn't rainout because the last week I have been running it with the water reservoir empty and the heating element off. Doing that I still get woken up with the hurricane force winds, just without the ocean spray.

I also considered the possibility of mask leakage forcing it to ramp up, but why then doesn't it cycle down to my normal minimum when I'm wide awake breathing normally?

Hovercraft?
Cpap airflow often feels like it is many times what it really is, because we are not yet used to it.
Your cpap can not even inflate a balloon! (Your dog grooves on more airflow running past the car window.)
Water only "climbs out of the tank" when it is filled too high, or sits at an angle--(level surface only, please.)
Rainout is water vapor condensing on a cold surface, like the inside of an unheated tube.
I used S9's for nearly five years, and the Climateline heated hose was well worth the minimal price difference.

Which mask are you using? Please fill out your equipment profile - https://www.cpaptalk.com/ucp.php?i=prof ... pment_info

The only thing I can think of at this point is the possibility of a leak somewhere else in the circuit - humidifier not seated properly, hose connection loose, emergency vent in mask stuck in open position, ...
