Res Med Air touch 20 with foam

Post by AMESS » Sat Oct 21, 2017 6:47 am

Second night. 87 on res med score. No leaks. 1.9 events. Used for 4 hrs. This sounds good but--every night I wake up after about 4 hrs, get figity and mask leaks. Cant get it controlled. Whip mask off and go back to sleep without it.
Husband says he then hears me having events.

What to do?

Don't yield to the temptation to remove the mask and sleep without it.
It is a really bad habit to start and you know the thing about bad habits...notoriously hard to break.

I know it's easier said than done with the leaks or too hot or whatever....but you can't be creating that bad habit.
Have you considered using a mask liner? If not, maybe you should.

Thought the foam is the liner--yes? no?

No. The foam is not the liner.

From my experience, the "resp. therapist" is just a CPAP sales person.

Some of them know their stuff, some don't. When you're new, you tend to just trust the RT. It's always a good idea to research and check whatever they tell you to be sure you're getting accurate information.

While the foam may act like a liner...it isn't a liner.

A liner would help with minor leaks and also help with the sensation of things being too warm.

You can make your own out of an old Tshirt or buy one ready made. Padacheek liners are designed for months and months of use but I don't advise spending the money on one until the person is for sure the mask is probably workable for them.
Hence maybe making your own and giving it a try to see if liners help or not...then maybe get one of Padacheek's.

I have the silicone version of the same mask. When I wake during the night, this is what I often do: turn off the machine, then just undo the magnets. Keeping the rest of the straps in place, I lift the mask off of my nose to enjoy a couple of breaths of regular room air, scratch my nose if it's itchy, then refasten the magnets. Then, I turn the machine back on. Maybe this would help you keep it on?
One note: I ALWAYS make sure my machine is OFF when putting on and taking off my mask. A jet of air straight into my eye the first morning taught me that one!

If you want to try making a liner, you can find a pattern at this web site:
http://montfordhouse.com/cpap/diy-cotton-mask-liner.pdf

I used this pattern when making my own mask liners. I used an old well-worn tee shirt to make my first liners. I have also used paint rags I purchased at Lowes. When I was using the liners, I would place the dirty liners in a small bag my wife made and we would throw it in the wash with the light colors. We would iron the liners dry which would return them to the original shape. The pattern above will work for small or medium masks such as the F20. I have used this pattern with the F20 as well as the F10 and Simplus.

I like that Rainmom--take it off, take a breather-put it back on. This (res med airfit 20 ) is the best mask (with foam) I have had. Its hard getting used to this stuff--but carry on. I am getting no leaks or leaks that dont matter and even A 91 on the res med score.

I can't see how a liner would do anything but make it feel even warmer. Even the Amara View I've been trying is way too hot. It's like being under the covers letting the hot air build up.

Silicone traps moisture next to your skin, making you feel warmer when it is hot and cooler when it is cold.
The water in sweat is funny that way--but not amusingly so.
Cloth wicks the moisture away from your skin, for a warmer feeling when the room is cold,
and a cooler feeling when the room is hot.
The porous cloth also silences the occasional "face fart", so they are less disturbing.
The memory foam in the Airtouch cushion is for fit, and possibly noise abatement.
Not sure how much temperature control it can do, because different foams have different properties.

Hi AMESS - I just came from my DME's office this morning where she gave me an AirFit F20 to try (as I went in looking for something to replace my aging Quattro) - and while I was there she showed me the cushion for the F20 that has the "memory foam" lining and told me that if I enjoy the F20 mask that using this new alternate cushion might be a possibility for me - it looked very comfy so I'm pretty eager to give it a try.

My question to you (and the group) is: do you use cloth liners like sold at padacheek.com? I'm a big fan of their products and have used them with all the different masks I have tried - so I've already ordered some for the F20 (although they won't get to me for a few days).

Because here's the thing - how are you supposed to keep the "memory foam" (in quotes because it's not exactly memory foam like they make beds out of - but similar) part clean if that is touching your face directly? I mean, the normal mask cushions are made out of washable material - but my thinking is that with a padacheek type liner between the skin of my face and this new "memory foam" material, I wouldn't have an issue with needing to clean it.

I'm sure I'll wind up trying this combination and can report my findings back here for the group to see - I just thought I'd check first and see if anyone has tried it yet.

- thanks - Roger
