Hi, I'm new and I've been poking around the forums for a couple of days. Lots of helpful info here! I've just finished my second week on CPAP therapy (about 4 hours a night is what I can tolerate so far) and I'm looking forward to loading up Sleepyhead. But to start with, I have a silly/weird question.
When I have the CPAP on and I'm not asleep yet (it's taking quite awhile), I often feel the need to swallow. Not because of air bubbles, if anything I think my before-bed fluoride treatment may be making me salivate. Does this register as an apnea?
Does swallowing cause/show an apnea?

Re: Does swallowing cause/show an apnea?
Probably won't register as anything unless you pause your breathing for very long when you swallow.
The machine doesn't know if you are awake or asleep...it only measures air flow and sometimes our awake breathing is more irregular than asleep breathing and the machine will mistakeningly flag it as some sort of apnea. Not a big deal if it does unless there are a lot of awake breathing flags and then it messes with the overall averages a bit but they can be mentally removed from the evaluation if needed.
A few here and there isn't going to be a big deal.
All the apnea event flags require at least a 10 second duration and a certain amount of flow reduction...so unless you hold your breath for 10 seconds or more while swallowing it won't cause the machine to flag anything.
