Cpap about be run over in “tragic” accident

Post by G1itched » Sat Oct 07, 2017 8:56 am

Okay I’m just going to lay all the facts out here at once. I am a 27 year old who has be diagnosed with SEVER sleep apnea. I am in the process to get gastric bypass surgery within that program I was into forced into doing a sleep study which than caused the precedes od this putrid machine/mask combination into my home. My neurologist is very worried because of my background. You see several years ago I survived a very brutal sexual assault, during this attack the individual attempted to strangle and smother me. It has left me with PTSD when objects come comes my neck/face-mouth/nose. In the last week just getting the mask to my face is making me have flash backs, shake, cry, I’m having full blown panic attacks I haven’t had the like of in years. I’m having nightmares I haven’t had since right after my assault happened. The only three times I’ve been able to actually wear it have been to take my sleeping pills and anti anxiety medication and wait until I’ve almost passed out to put them on. So far that doing it that way has caused me to scratch my own face to try to get the mask off in my sleep and I wake up with off and on the floor. My respiratory therapist gave me a nasal pillow mask and told me that if I don’t wear it Insurance may not pay for it and I’ll get slapped with the bill. I don’t like my mask, it hurts my nose and I feel like I can’t breath. It feels heaving with the tube in front of me and I can’t sleep like a normal person. I don’t know if there is a mask that I’ll be able to tolerate and I don’t think I’m gonna be able to tolerate this machine. Has anyone had experience dealing with anything like this? Does anyone have any mask suggestions? Can I push for a therapy treatment other than a cpap to treat my apnea?

I am so sorry about what happened to you. Words fail me.

I have no idea how effective this would be but you might want to check this out:

http://amhc.org/100-sleep-disorders/art ... -and-sleep

I don't know how this would work in your situation, but you might want to check out cloth Elan nasal mask I wear. Maybe the sensation of cloth would be less likely to recreate the trauma you have experienced with other masks.

I wish you all the luck in the world.

Thank you for the article and the mask suggestion. I will check it out. I’m exhausted, frustrated and don’t know what to do at this point.

I can only offer my sincere sorrow for your experience. I have aq minor case of PTSD from childhood dental experiences so that I am unable to go to a dentist. I just shut down when its time to make an appointment. My ex suffered much more severe issues with childhood abuse, and there were things she could not do. That included gaining trust in therapists. It makes life such challenge. The only thing I can offer is to continue to work with therapists who are true experts at PTSD, take it slow and don't get too down with setbacks. Your Dr may be able to get an exclusion for you from the user requirements based on your other conditions. The Dr needs to write a letter of justification and explanation to the insurance CO and go to bat for you.

Best wishes good luck and keep at it. Keep the goal in sight, and remember that a restful nights sleep is worth the work to get there.

Hi - I imagine you must have had therapy following your assault, but if not please do what you can to get some now and learn CBT (it's usually quick and easy (weeks) compared to e.g. years of psychotherapy). You must get help first for that trauma and then you'll be able to deal with the mask. While you're waiting, do whatever you can to not sleep on your back (wear a towel stuffed backpk if necessary so you won't flip over - tho' I don't know if your bypass surg. might interfere) as a lot more apneas are provoked by back sleeping.

Please ignore alphabet boy's bluntness. The rest of us do, as much as we're able

I am so sorry for what's happened to you. I do understand a little about PTSD so I know this may be difficult for you. But I also know that we are a resilient people, and you can find a way past this.

I myself use a nasal pillow mask, and I know the first week was at some moments incredibly painful. But I wanted Cpap therapy to work, and I got some wonderful advice from the folks here and got through the worst of it, and now I mask up every night and can hardly tell I'm wearing it. Lansinoh at night to reduce friction, warm compresses and Neosporin during the day to speed healing, patience and persistence. You CAN do this!

so sorry to hear that

the only treatment is an xpap
you need a shrink to get you past the other problems

you might get a tracheostomy and a machine that attaches to your throat
ask you doctor about that
the shrink option should be tried first
No, no, no, no. A tracheostomy is the last thing that should be tried even in normal cases. Why the bleep would you suggest that someone with this person's history try this?

If G1itched decides on therapy for his/her issues, the person to see would be someone who specializes in PTSD issues. Julie's advice about trying CBT for PTSD is good.

CBT - cognitive behaviour therapy. Have you been living under a rock?

CBT = computer based training in my experience
what is your new usage of that acronym
or do you use computers to fix the PTSD trauma
Hmm, the person who claims he is a genius didn't even bother to do do a google search.

That's a rhetorical question, right?

You are very welcome and even though I fortunately never suffered from PTSD, I definitely can empathize with your situation.

Dear friend: You have a whale of a tale here and hopfefully you are getting good mental health help. The drugs you are taking should calm you down--at least some what.
The following is a mask with all the workings at the top of the head. To my knowledge its the only one. I have used it but it just did not work for me. But it is comfortable.

Dreamwear Nasal by Philips Respironics. There is a couple masks with this name so you will have to wade through them. You see nothing but the pillow cushions. The site wont allow me to send you the link but just go to google and type the above in.

You have a unique situation and your health care provider may be able to get through the red tape and and help get you these products at low cost. The masks are cheap --its the machine that is costly, but there are used everything (mask, parts machines) around. Check this cpaptalk forum. In addition just type in on google cpap products and you will see even more.

In the meantime--good luck and keep us informed. Do ask if there's any other info we can give you, or any other help you may need.

From your Cpap user friend-

I am currently in therapy and have been for several years. Right now I am struggling with the fact that the cpap is brining up things I thought I had worked past already. I have an appointment to see a sleep psychologist who specializing in treating my type of issues, however I have to wait 2 1/2 more months before I get in to see her. I feel like at this point I’m better off with the apnea. My boyfriend is being as supportive as he can be and after the reasearch he did on sleep apnea is very adimant I continue to try to make treatment work. Last week when I did the fitting, the respitory therapist tried to get me to take a nasal mask, or full face mask and I refused. I have an appointment Monday morning to see my tregualr therapist, but I feel like it’s a pointless battle. I never would have agreed to even try cpap therapy if I would have known it would bring all of this up again. I really wanted to try to make it work, because everyone says how their lives change for the better, but right now I’m not seeing that as an option. The machine I have is an auto adjusting so it starts with low pressure than works it’s way up, I feel like I can’t breathe even when it’s at a low pressure.

OP - The best way to get use to a change, is to do so when you are fully awake so you can use your brain to overcome your emotions. Spend time using your equipment while awake and watching TV. The more comfortable you become with your equipment, the less likely you are to have issues while sleeping.

I just looked at the dream wear mask and I think I’m going to be asking to switch. That mask takes the focal point and weight away from my nose and mouth. Do you mind if I ask what your issues with it were? Does it go off of severatity of apnea?
