Finding a 960

Post by Kiralynx » Tue Oct 03, 2017 10:38 pm

Heyla, folks....

Been awhile since I dropped in here.

Been busy doing Barn Hunt with my dogs, and working on Master Harper's AKC Grand Championship.

And this last weekend, I had a cataclysm.

While at a Barn Hunt, my 960 was knocked on the floor of the motel. (Handyman from hotel was in room.) Thank GHU I had removed the water chamber from the humidifier!

But there seemed to be an issue with it. Like, the on/off switch didn't work. The only way I could turn it on or off was to unplug it.

My DME (bless them!) contrived to get a rental machine up to me -- turned out one of the employees was coming up to the very town I was in to watch her son play university football and agreed to hand-carry it to my motel, to same me weekend overnight shipping!

But now the problem -- I'm two years shy of getting a replacement, and my current machine is three years old, and out of warranty.

Respironics apparently won't even check an out-of-warranty machine for whether or not it is working.

It SEEMS to be working, but, dang, this is my LIFE we're talking about here.

CPAP.COM no longer carries the ASV machines. Any thoughts for where I could find a replacement 960?

(I'm going to start carrying my old Beastie with me as a traveling back-up. Next time, I might not be so lucky as to have (a) removed the water chamber, and (b) have a DME employee traveling my way!)

And so... where is the current link for Sleepyhead?

Been sending JediMark $5 a month for it for the last 3 years.

Unfortunately, my current computer doesn't have a card reader, and I haven't yet found one that works with it.

Others will tell you but my guess is you should be able to use a SD/usb card reader and direct sleepyhead to that.

I bought the cheapest USB card reader I found at Walmart and it works just fine.

You haven't said who your insurance is but my understanding is that if/when the cpap no longer functions or cost more to repair than replace it will be a covered replacement.

You haven't said who your DME is but to me it sounds like (Apria) they want to sell you another at the higher out-of-pocket costs than going thru insurance.

IOW - IMO you are entitled to a replacement machine.

If handyman knocked machine, you should demand reimbursement from the hotel. If it is a national chain, they are used to settling claims and often handle them quite nicely.

If all else fails, you can get a used, low-hours, 6-month-seller-warranty for $1399 at - http://www.secondwindcpap.com/Used_CPAP.html

Good luck!

+100 to filing a claim with the hotel!
Their fault--their cost.

If you want it checked out give ACBio a call, they did my 960 that I have as one of my backups, and the price was reasonable. http://acbio.com/

Actually, my DME is NOT Apria. (Surprise!) Apria wouldn't have gotten a rental machine to me for ANY reason, let alone one of the employees hand-delivering the blasted thing. Apria wouldn't have even returned my phone call. (I know this because that's exactly what they did four years ago when I lost a small piece off my old Beastie's humidifier while in Atlanta. There was an Apria office not 10 minutes from me, and I spent the whole five days without the humidifier (which I need) until I could get home and install the replacement humidifier that I had on hand. 10 weeks later, Apria sent me a humidifier replacement which I hadn't asked for. )

I was beastly tired yesterday, but I believe you are right. I just have to determine how best to get it. (Tired not because of no CPAP, tired because I'd done 9 runs with my Harper Dachs, plus driving six hours each way to get there.)

Amazingly enough, a PNY Combo from Walmart, as you suggested, works. Thank you.

Just did. I'm am not -- thank Ghu -- seeing anything on the software which looks different from before the cataclysm.

I'm sorry -- that sentence didn't come out the way it should have. It implies that the handyman might have knocked to machine on the floor. He did not. What happened was, I had removed the water chamber from it, and was going to put it away in prep for the visit while I was not there. My knee gave way, and I fell, tangling the power cord as I went down, and pulling the machine off the nightstand. So as tempting as it would be, I cannot blame either the handyman or the hotel for this cataclysm. It is all my own clumsiness.

Thanks for the reminder of Second Wind. I had forgotten them.

Next headache is to extract a copy of my script from my GP. She doesn't like to give me a copy -- she wants to send it direct to the DME, *and* the last time, she reversed the EPAP and IPAP.

I need to go find my PDF files for the 960 manuals..... I know I put them in a SAFE place. The question is, which one?

We here things like this way too much. Keep the patient ignorant and under the thumb of the medical practice.

Oh, certainly! I am intensely grateful to the lady who directed me to CPAPTALK with the comment that "These are not your average CPAP users, but they are what all CPAP users should be like!" (She has since passed away, but I remain grateful!)

I would never have gotten as far as I have with my two Beasties without the help here.

The problem is that my GP is wholly ignorant of anything CPAP. I took her a completely filled out sheet delineating the 960, which had replaced my original Beastie, along with my original ASV script, and how the 960 would need to be set to equal the Beastie, along with the notation "Mask of patient's choice."

The DME called ME to ask me what she meant. She'd put "Full Face Mask" down (and I don't use a full-face -- I hate them). She had the numbers all mixed up.

It was nuts. And if I hadn't known what I learned here, my therapy could have been totally screwed up.
