Heated Tube for Dreamstation

Post by Sleeping Ugly » Mon Sep 25, 2017 11:43 am

I keep getting "rain out" in my mask in the morning. I use my humidifier, but my room is kept very cool--hence the rain out.

I have spent my lunch half-hour reading about humidification settings, etc. to problem solve how to fix my rain out, but I can't seem to find the answer to one question: Does the Dreamstation come with a heated tube or is there a chance that I got a "standard" tube? Is there a way I can tell by looking?

One thing I do know, is that my DME did not activate the heated hose function. I saw that when I was in the therapy mode changing my minimum pressure. I left the heated hose setting alone, because I didn't feel educated enough to use it. I do use the heated humidifier, set on 5, but now I am starting to get rain out, so I want to explore turning on the heated hose function--if I have a heated hose. I feel like such a moron. If this is the stupid question that I think it is, you can just laugh at me while you are hanging out at the water cooler. Or at home at the dinner table--or at the next family reunion--or if you talk to your pets. This one may be worthy of making a call to someone.

I have not been a hose head for very long, but my Dreamstation did NOT come with a heated hose. I would guess that if it was turned off in settings it is probably a standard (cheap) hose.

How could you tell you have a standard hose?

If it's not a heated hose, do you think a hose cover would work as well as buying an expensive heated hose?

Looks like the heated hose has a different connector:

Just checked--it's the cheap hose.

It's the standard hose that (I think) most people use. The Climateline (heated) hose is normally sold as an option. The Climateline hose has an electrical connection at one end and it's brown. I have one for my S9, but have rarely used it.
Fixed pressure at 11

A hose cover/cozy might be enough to prevent the condensation. That's what we used to use before heated hoses were available.
See this thread posts # 2 & #3 for various options
viewtopic/t94035/Pugsys-Pointers-3Deali ... -road.html

I use a heated hose year round. It enables me to get a consistent humidity delivery no matter what the ambient humidity might be and I just adjust the hose air temp as needed depending on the season. During warmer months I use a lower temp and in cooler months I use a warmer temp.

ResMed and Respironics both offer machine packages either with or without the heated hose.
Sounds like you got the without box. Your insurance should pay for another hose if it has been 3 months so really all you have to do is ask your supplier.
If it hasn't been 3 months it will be cheaper to buy one online somewhere than pay DME prices if insurance isn't paying.

Just the other day I had rainout with my DreamStation.

It's actually quite annoying with the Airfit P10 mask. That's because I had water collect in the fine mesh of the mask, partially blocking those air holes. They're small enough to begin with, moisture in them severely limited the airflow (at least in my case).

I also had water condense in my non-heated hose.

Changing my humidity setting from 5 to 3 seems to have solved both these problems, but it's only been a few days so I can't be sure.

Can anyone who owns the heated hose comment on how easy it is to wash it? Is it OK to submerge the hose in soapy water?

I always ask for the heated tubing. I prefer it over the regular. It keeps my sinuses clear. Once the heated tubing is connected, the display automatically comes up. There is nothing in the clinician settings to adjust for a heated tube. I have the Dreamstation Pro and love it.

Yes there is.
It doesn't have to be set on automatic.
If it is changed from automatic to manual there a wide range of potential combinations that can be used.

I, too, like to keep my regeneration chamber (AKA bedroom ) as nice and frosty as the long-term storage facility at the morgue.

My Dreamstation kit came with both the regular and the heated hose, but I have only used the latter. As mentioned, you can tell if it's the heated hose by the small electrical connections where it plugs into the humidifier unit. If your Dreamstation came with only the regular hose, the way I see it you have a couple of options:

1. Get a hose cozy or hose cover, for example the one here: http://padacheek.com/PAC_Hosecover.html

2. Get the actual heated hose, which will in fact cost you less, it seems: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/pr-dre ... gkQAvD_BwE

Back in the days of yore, before my time and before heated tubes were invented , legend has it our CPAP ancestors had to make do with hose cozies, but now in our modern times, why do without the amenity of a heated hose?

After monkeying around with the settings a bit, I settled on "3" for the humidifier and "3" for the heated hose. Been comfortable ever since, and no rainout of course, despite sleeping in what I soothingly describe as a beer fridge.

I like your description of them morgue temp. I run my bedroom a/c at 60 degrees to get to sleep, warming it up slightly thru the night. No Rainout, don't use HH, Just large Container of Ice Water. Jim

For what it's worth. We have a really good AC guy who told me to be careful about setting the thermostat below 68 when it gets cooler outside. If the outside temps get too cold you can damage the compressor if it cuts on and runs when it's cold outside. Some newer AC units even have a temp sensor that will keep them from turning on when the outside air gets too cold.

I am a Good A/C man, yes I know in cold weather the oil gets stiff, it can draw liquid back to the intake. Mine even shuts off the fan when the temp goes low.
I don't think window units, are likely to slug the compressor, outside units are more dangerous, some have heaters on the compressors.

I did have to turn it off in cold weather, the fan would shut it off and ice would form on the fan water slinger, making it out of balance. I turned off the heat vents in the bedroom year around. Jim
