Are there no moderators here?

Post by skylark40 » Sun Sep 17, 2017 5:06 pm

This is probably a stupid question to ask, but, are there no moderators in this forum to delete offensive posts, block offensive posters, etc.?

I've been a part of one online community or another for many, many years, and I've don't think I've ever seen a forum where someone is allowed to swear, name call and debase other users, and otherwise make a nuisance of themselves.

Nope. The forum owner believes in a self-policing no censorship forum, depending on basic human decency to keep things under control. Sometimes there are issues with this belief.

Basic human decency is like common sense; not too common.

What a shame a good forum has to be ruined by a few people.

It's only ruined if you choose to let it be (for you). There's a 'foe' feature where you can not have to see your 'enemy's' posts, or you can just choose not to read them beyond the headers, or you can just skip over things. It's not that hard and it's better than forums with tons of rules and regs that routinely police things even though we're supposedly all adults with free speech.

Yep, there are definitely issues with it. The problem with "depending on basic human decency" is that some people don't have a clue what that is. And as far as self-policing? Some folks just don't seem to have the ability to do that at all, or just choose not to.

Obviously, this is not my forum and If I don't like the lack of rules, I can leave. That said, I do wish there was at least some moderation for situations like "we all know who" when I would venture that most of the members want him banned.

I don't believe the forum is entirely ruined, but is sure is deeply downgraded. But I refuse to let someone like that run me off from a place that is otherwise so helpful. This place has definitely had it's "problem people," but in my 10 years here I haven't seen anything like this.

The foe option helps some, and I'm definitely using it.

The forum owner is enjoying his social experiment, letting a bunch of cranky sleep-deprived people duke it out.

Ignoring can be hard, but truly is what needs to be done, definitely.

So to answer your question, there are no moderators.

Regarding your statement calling for adults to be in charge, I don't need a moderator telling me who is behaving properly or who's opinion I should believe. As an adult, I will make those decisions.

Denying what the facts show is a pathetic tactic. However thanks for calling me the same thing you call yourself. Guess we are on equal footing now.

Here is an analogy for those who have a little patience.

Anyone here watch Chelsea Handler's show on Netflix?

We watched a recent show where she did an "expose" on TwitterBots. (I don't use Twitter and I did not know they had Bots)

What was interesting was, to dig into the whole Bot situation, they made a Bot themselves and then bought another thousand Bots to enlist as followers of their Bot. Then they programmed their Bot with random phrases. The Bots would then reply to a post using one of their programmed phrases.

One person spent the weekend arguing with the Bot.

So, if you think of the unacceptable posts and imagine they are the TwitterBot equivalent - it would seem pointless to rationalise or debate with a Bot, and your actions might be completely different.

The 3 choices I can think of are:
You can ignore these Twitter/forum bot like posts
You can hide these Twitter/forum bot like members (using the Foe Feature)
You can try to rationalize or debate with a Bot like member

Very good point! If something is ignored, it's like it didn't exist, therefore can't be responded to. If a person ignores what someone says, they don't respond to it. If they respond, then they're not ignoring.
