Prednisone & apena . . .

Post by hobbs » Tue Sep 12, 2017 3:24 pm

Wife has used her APAP 4+ hours 45% of the time over the last (2) years. AHI is always less than .5. She does not have horrible feelings from not using it like I do if I miss a night. Not good and she knows it and what can happen. Rule #1; do not argue with the wife! We are going hunting Polar Bears with a camera at a remote lodge on Hudson's Bay Canada starting tomorrow for (6) nights. She started a (6) day course of Prednisone yesterday for a unrelated condition. Do I get her to take it?

What? Are you asking about any interaction between Cpap and prednisone? You could always Google that phrase, but... I've 'taken' both at the same time with no problem.

No you don't (need to taper). Your latest wrong statement... guaranteed to make newbies run away.

I have taken prednisone several times in the past. The six day pack has never affected my sleep or my treatment. Large doses, on the other hand, will affect my sleep. The medication makes me hyper and I have a heck of a time sleeping. The first few nights I sleep two to three hours at the most. Then, as the dosage is reduced, my normal sleep pattern returns.

He's actually correct this time. It's very important to taper Prednisone! Google it. I've been on Prednisone for several months and now tapering it. Initially I tapered too quickly. Awful side effects! Now I drop down one mg a month and hope to be completely off in a few months.

Well, I had no trouble at all, on and off at diff. times, but then I only took a very small dose at any time.

When I was taking high dosages, the lowest tapering off dose I had was 10 mg. The six day pack starts off at 24 mg and tapers down to 4 mg.

Short term, low dose prednisone does not typically cause a change in breathing. However, if you are diabetic, it can cause you to develop unstable blood sugar very quickly.

Question was misunderstood . . .

Restated; does apena respond to treatment with Prednisone? She does not want to take the APAP. As to tapering; yes and no. I have had Lichen Planus for 40+ years. 60mg a day for 15 days daty and stop cold turkey is a common treatment. YMMV.

As in take the pills and not use the machine??? I can't see any way that taking the pills would do anything to help keep the airway open in lieu of using the machine.

.

Except in the case of a five pack where there is a built in taper plan and generally only taken for five days, it's the rare person who can cold turkey Prednisone. For some, this med is a miracle; however, there is a reason why Prednisone is known as a nasty med.

Hi Hobbs,

Taking Prednisone was part of my chemo regimen and I still needed to use my machine. The first time, I was giving 100mg for five days and being CT'd was hell. Excuse my language but I wouldn't wish what I went through on my worst enemy.

During the subsequent treatments, I took 50mgs for the same amount of time. CTing it was still rough but I decided I wanted to be done with the drug vs. prolonging the agony as taking it was the worst part of my chemo.

As an FYI, just because a medical practice is a common treatment doesn't mean it is appropriate for every patient. If you wife is sensitive to meds like I am and decides to take the drug, she definitely might want to consider a taper.

I wish her all the luck in the world.

I started out on 40 mg prednisone using my cpap, no side effects, stayed on 40 about 6 months then started weaning down, that was 6 years ago and still take pred. Take the meds and cpap...JMHO.
