Newbie- hard to fall asleep
Newbie- hard to fall asleep
New to CPAP after being diagnosed with Severe Apnea (54 episodes/hr) . Doing well so far - I just had to switch from a Resmed full face mask to the Dreamwear Nasal mask due to leaks . My question is did anyone else have trouble falling asleep in the beginning of their therapy? I am def sleeping better overall but getting to sleep is a problem. Thanks
Re: Newbie- hard to fall asleep
Did you have trouble falling asleep before you started cpap therapy or is this something brand new that just started?

I must be lucky because I actually fall asleep faster than with out the CPAP and have had very little issue with getting used to the whole thing. One thing that I think helps me at least is that I have my pressure ramp up over ten minutes instead of going full pressure right from the git.

What you are going thru is really normal. Our body will fight the mask. Try to get used to the mask. Spend some time reading, listening to music or watching tv with the mask on. There will come a time (real soon), you'll be able to put the mask on and fall asleep in a short period of time.

It will get better! In a month you will be doing ok, and I keep getting better even after several years.

Here's a view from Sleepyhead I don't usually see posted here:

I'm coming up on one month of CPAP, and absolutely still getting used to it. Sometimes trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, wake up with a headache or my mouth open, mask comes off in the night, etc etc etc. I've also had a couple nights where it felt like I actually got a decent night's sleep, and I felt better for it. And the challenges are declining in frequency and intensity, overall.
Just looking at this "overview" screen, it seems to me that things are generally trending in the right direction. AHI is trending down, usage and session times trending up, and so forth. But it's an up and down process thus far. Not linear. I'm sure it's going to get better, this data reinforces my belief, and I've set my mind that this is just how it's going to be. I'm sure it can get better for you, too.
