Things to do while waiting for membership approval

Post by Pugsy » Tue Sep 05, 2017 8:28 am

As many of you new people know the membership approval time frame has hit some real big snags.
It's taking weeks to hear back and get approved.

Some history as to how this came about. Last May we got attacked by spam bots who figured out a way to get past the automated membership approval process and they created hundreds or thousands of new membership IDs and bombarded us with thousands and thousands of spam. So many and so fast it was physically impossible to manually remove them.

At any rate because of that the security measures in place to prevent that sort of thing from happening again are still under a trial and error situation.

Membership right now requires manual approval and there is only one person that I know of who is doing it (or was doing it) and sometimes she messed up and allowed a spammer through and sometimes she didn't approve a legit request. She's having to go by IP address and it isn't a good/perfect tool.
See this thread
viewtopic/t156329/Forum-Updates.html

In the meantime you can go ahead and post and ask questions and we will try to answer.
PLEASE, PLEASE use the same ID each time you post so that we can follow you better and try to stay in one thread if you are asking for specific help.
If you want to post screen shots of your reports...you can't post an active link until you are a logged in member but there is a way around it.
Just modify the address with one change and we know how to fix it and make it a working link. PLEASE do just the one change because if you start changing things too much we won't know what you changed.

For example...you have an image on imgur.com that you wish to share with us and get our thoughts.

the real working link might look something like this . I put a couple of spaces before the slash marks in it so you could see it easily
https: //imgur.com/z5qqrtk

what you can do and be consistent with is modify it by doing (dot) before the com...then we can put the real . in and make it a working link. Then we can post it in your thread so everyone can see the image.

so like this https://imgur(dot)com/z5qqrtk

and we can then replace the (dot) with . and you get this
https://imgur.com/z5qqrtk

You have to be careful though...you have to make sure that you copy the url exactly before you modify it.

So you can still get help here and we can work around the link issue..
Remember...Please use the same ID...don't keep changing it and don't use "guest"...we have no way at all to follow guest posts. If your use "ineedhelp"....use it all the way through so there is consistency.

EDIT to add imgur instructions in case someone doesn't know
How to use imgur
ttps://sleep.tnet.com/reference/tips/imgur

How to organize...3 pages, be sure to read all 3
ttps://sleep.tnet.com/resources/sleepyhead/shorganize

We don't need or want all the graphs the software will offer. Just the basics and if we need something else we can ask.

Another thing; there is much good information in the archives,
(I lurked for several months before ever posting)
but the forum search window is limited to only TWO words.
You can use your regular browser to search, adding cpaptalk to your other keywords.

I received a confirmation of me starting the signing up process about a month ago (still waiting on an account). I came here a week before getting my cpap to learn because I heard that around 50% of people who start cpap do not stick with it. I learned a few things from searching and reading the posts. I've been compliant now for 27 straight days and feel better than I have in years. I'm still struggling, but experimenting and learning from here has helped a lot. The search function works well and there is a TON of information here that helped me just jump in and become compliant on day one and continue the process.

The one thing I've learned is that adapting to cpap is a mental process, rather than a physical one. If one focuses on the problems, they tend to get worse. One night, I had a severe feeling of claustrophobia and ripped my mask off in the middle of the night. When I looked at my sleepyhead data the next day, I saw that I had a significant apnea right before the panic feeling. I wouldn't have figured that out without this place. So, thanks for all of your help - even though you didn't know you were giving it.

BTW, there is one advantage to cpap that I've discovered - you can sleep easily with the covers over your head! So, not everything about sleeping with a machine attached to your face is bad.

I'm glad you're doing so well, but... sleeping with covers over your head is a baaad idea - the CO2 vent holes (little patch of tiny ones or ring of same around hose attachment) should never be blocked - you do not want to rebreathe CO2!

My mask exhale vents are nowhere near blocked. The air coming in comes from outside the covers through the hose. I seriously doubt I'm increasing C02, but understand the point.

The CO2 comes out of the mask from inside you and should not be blocked from leaving... it does NOT come from 'outside'.

Another suggestion for people waiting for membership is that as you read the archives you'll learn to identify the people who are annoyers and trolls on this un-moderated board. Try your best to ignore them until you membership is approved. Engaging and arguing with them just makes them more annoying--as you can see from the troll wars that occur all too frequently here. Your best bet is not to feed the trolls.

Once you get approved as a member you can go to the user control panel and select them as "foes"--you will no longer see their posts. I highly recommend that--life is much better when you don't have to read their nonsense or feel you need to respond.

Where did I say CO2 comes from outside? I said air comes from outside the covers. In fact, it is filtered heated air at just the right humidity.

Another thing you can do while waiting is look up xxyzx's posts. Read them as entertainment, DO NOT listen to any advice he may have given. He is the forum clown, or village idiot.

Then, go join Apneaboard, where you will not get the same entertainment, but you will get good advice.

Have fun!

Wooo Hoooo!!

Welcome aboard ... we need more good apeaics to fight off the Apneaboard trolls.
President-pretender, J. Biden, said "the DNC has built the largest voter fraud organization in US history". Too bad they didn’t build the smartest voter fraud organization and got caught.
