Re: what shift work does to your sleep and you
From direct personal experience I can testify that shift work certainly isn't fun, but in our society it is a necessity for a lot of people to work those hours. .
When I was far younger, I worked a rotating shift (Days, Evenings, Midnight) for perhaps 5 or 6 years. It was tough to adapt to the weekly reorientation, and I got very poor quality sleep during the midnights cycle. Thank goodness I finally got a straight days position in the same organization. And I then worked there in the Nuclear Industry for a total 42 years.
Through the years there have been many studies and reports that show that shift work does indeed have many bad effects. Despite my time in purgatory, I survived and still have better health than many of my friends of similar advanced age. Either the 6years in Purgatory didn't have lasting damage, or I am benefitting from good genes and native hardiness.

New employees are often stuck with the least desirable shifts.

In 25 years of work in Surface Mining, I spent 6 years in the daylight, 5 and a half of that time was laid off. I did cure my night vision I burnt out in Viet Nam, welding without goggles (too Hot). Jimchunkyfrog wrote:New employees are often stuck with the least desirable shifts.
