Mouthguard and Tongue base obstructions

Post by mangos21 » Mon Aug 07, 2017 9:09 am

I have a mandibular advancement device (Myerson EMA specifically) and have tried using it to its maximum advancement level. It has made no difference to my SDB. Does that mean it is safe to say i do not have obstruction at the tongue-base level, and my problems are with the soft palate?

Let's understand your question before answering. Obstructions are typically where the tongue and soft palate meet and block the airway. So, it's not an either/or - the tongue base and soft palate "work" together to create the blockage.

So, you cannot be sure that failure of a mandibular advancement device to treat obstructive apnea means that the tongue base is not part of the problem.

If you are considering UPPP and/or tongue base reduction surgery, I would like to ask a few questions. The first question is why are you not using CPAP?
