Transcend humidifier piece missing - need a hack

Post by EveOett » Sun Aug 06, 2017 8:55 am

Hi friends,
I'm travelling with a Transcend mini cpap and humidifier. The humidifier has a tiny "drain plug" in a corner of the tank that pops off to drain the water, a small, clear plastic valve. This piece has totally vanished and I can't use the humidifier without it. Its Sunday, there are no customer service lines open and I'm in a bit of a panic about finding a solution. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do until I can get this plug replaced?

Shut off the humidifier and see if you can get by without it.

Or from outside the box...

Put a piece of tape over the drain hole to keep air from leaking out. Turn off the heat to the humidifier if possible.

Take 1 paper towel, soak it in water, roll it up to fit inside your tube and slide it in. This will provide a small amount of humidity but most likely won't last all night. It may be enough to allow you to fall to sleep and get a few hours of restful sleep.

Thanks for all the ideas! I used the unit with no humidifier alone last night. Very stuffy today, but probably better than no therapy at all. I will try to find some waterproof duct tape today.

And I like the idea of the wet paper towel in the hose, will definitely keep that in mind. I bet that would help.

THANKS!!! Much appreciated.

I should add that I have only tried this with the normal diameter hose and not the smaller diameter hose. Be sure to test things out prior to sleeping to make sure the air can flow around the obstruction from the paper towel.

Just tape it. Paper towel seems mildly dangerous and might impact operation of machine if it needs to detect inhale/exhale. Tape can be a permanent fix or get some sealant or putty that is safe for drinking water pipes. I remember buying some putty at hardware store to fix main line leak to the home until a plumber could come out. But that would have held forever if i wanted. Maybe do that. Go to hardware store. Just make sure it is safe for potable water.

Good call. Are you a seasoned aircraft mechanic?

Does this chamber come apart so you can put the gum (or putty or something) inside? I imagine putting something on the outside will affect the fit?

Something else you might consider - you know those rubber feet that are put on things to keep them in place? Can you find something like that at the hardware store? Or even a rubber stopper. If you google "rubber feet" you can see pix of what I'm talking about.

But gum is prob easier.

Don't have any idea what you have, but if it's a prong that had a cap that fit over it like covers the O2 port add in for XPAP, one used to come with some FF Masks too.

If it is O2 port sized, you could cut a 1 inch of O2 tubing and plug one end, and push it on the prong, also you could take it to a GOOD auto part store, they have different sized plugs. Jim

Thanks everyone! I knew there were a bunch of clever people in this group. I've picked up a little stopper that is actually the wrong size, but I managed to squeeze in in place by folding in in on itself, then used a double layer of duct tape over the top. I just didn't have time to scour every hardware store in town for the right size stopper.

The unit now seems like it might be somewhat water tight and hopefully withstand the heat from the unit (and not melt and generate toxic fumes, geez).

OK, you've convinced me to skip the wet paper towel in the hose.

Tomorrow I'll call the manufacturer and nicely ask them to replace this darn part.

Appreciate the help and support.
