Am I suppose to turn off my machine when I go to the bathroom at night?

You can do whatever you want, but, I think it's best if you are concerned about your data. You can also leave your mask on or remove it...whatever works for you. No CPAP police on duty at night.

Just enable the "autostart" feature on your machine. When you remove your mask, it'll shut down after a few seconds and then restart when you put the mask back on.

We don't know what machine he has...may not have a ResMed machine with smart start.

In three years of xPAP I can literally count on one hand the number of times I've gotten up to go. Used to be 1-2 per night, now nothing. But when I do I turn off the machine.

I turn it off so that it only records when I'm using it. My Dreamstation puts out a very bright light when it's turned on or off. It's only on for a couple of minutes, but I don't want it to bother my husband, so I keep a small cloth handy that I can drape over the light.

I have done both. With an apap i sometimes leave it on. That way i return to the last ipap rate.. I put a pillow on the mask so it is silent. I maybe overthink it. My starting ipap is 8. So if i see 8.4 ill shut it off. But if i see some meaningful increase ill keep it on figuring it will take time to get back to that desired level.

I get up at least once a night to use the bathroom. I usually turn it off and then just disconnect the hose from the mask and leave the mask on. (Sometimes I adjust the mask a bit to uncover my nose so I can breathe better while unhooked from the machine.) Although my machine has autostart enabled, it's a tossup whether it's going to work. My previous machine was extremely poor with that as well. And I can't reach the machine from the bed, so I just turn it off and on while I'm up.

Same here. I have to be standing next to the bed to reach the machine. I haven't used the auto-off feature (again, don't want to wake up my husband,) but I have had some success with auto-on. However, it doesn't come on until the 3rd breath.
I also leave the mask on and just disconnect the hose. Much easier than trying to get the mask on properly when I'm half asleep.

I hear ya! My nightstand is between the bed and CPAP (I have a six-foot heated hose and a much shorter covered regular hose). I've never used the auto-off either. With the auto-on, sometimes I've been in the bed reading and then decide to put the mask on to sleep. I wait and I wait and wait for the auto-on to work. I've even yelled at it to turn on and shook the hose because I'm too lazy to get up! Actually, shaking the hose has worked...either that or it just decided to pick that moment to turn on. But it would have been much faster to just get up and turn the thing on.
