CPAP First Week

Post by guitarman1956 » Mon Jul 17, 2017 7:17 pm

Hello: I just finished my first week with the CPAP. I can already tell I feel more "mentally" alert in mornings. However, I feel "Physically" tired. Is this normal? What can I expect.
Thanks

I am on day 5 of cpap, I too can relate with what you are saying.. I feel almost buzzed, like I've had a lot of caffeine, but part of me feels tired at the same time.. I snored and didn't sleep good most of my life so after 40 something years of crappy sleep my body isn't sure what to do with good restful sleep!

It's good you are seeing a difference to remember. Incase as you progress, there may be a few bumps.. You have probably been passing out into a coma like state from exhaustion till now
Most don't find an instant fix. For everything to resolve, including white/grey brain matter. it can takes 3-12 months.

Good that you are already feeling some benefits. I have some theories on this tiredness early in treatment based on my experience, and I figure I can't be the only one this might apply to. Once we begin on CPAP our body and brain has to recover from the trauma of untreated sleep apnea. After any sort of trauma we are advised to get plenty of rest and sleep and give ourselves time to heal. At one week in, you are healing. Your body is telling you to take it easy and allow for this process. Sometimes people expect to feel better on hours of sleep that are marginal at best even for maintenance, without allowing adequate and even more sleep during the recovery time. Also, before I was effectively treated, I was functioning on adrenaline and sheer determination. As soon as I started CPAP, it was like collapsed into that resource, and that was too soon. My body was not yet strong enough to take over carrying the load. The stress hormones that had been fueling my function were no longer coursing through me. I experienced a nearly catastrophic collapse. Be kind to yourself. Be nurturing. Make sure you are nutritionally sound as you heal and that you don't have deficiencies that need supplemented. I distinctly remember the day it changed for me. I woke up one morning and felt the strange sensation of being fully awake. I opened the door and leaned out into the sunny day and felt a desire to rejoin the world. I think of that as the day the last bit of a heavy load lifted from my shoulders. Hopefully you'll have your own recovery experience soon.

I'm on my eighteenth year of CPAP. Although I felt the improvement immediately, I still would fell sleepy mid-day. After many years, it happens less. Try to take a mid-day two-hour nap (no more) on the weekends. That helped me a lot; I always set an alarm to prevent sleeping longer than that.
