Metallic/Copper taste and smell

Post by Muffinbear » Sat Jul 15, 2017 1:47 pm

Has anyone ever experienced or heard of waking up with the smell and taste of metallic/copper or blood? My husband is having a terrible time with this issue
and we can't find a doctor or pulmonary specialist who has ever heard of such a thing. He does use a nasal gel prior to wearing the mask.
Thanks to anyone who can help.

I did have that problem a couple years ago...not from the CPAP, but, I had a copper/metallic taste in my mouth. Went to dentist and Primary care MD.
Never found out what it was, but it disappeared in about 2 weeks.

My Dad had that after a heart attack and my brother had that after a stroke. Not saying that is what is wrong, but you might have him get checked out by his primary and possibly a neurologist. I have that problem constantly, but it is caused by a specific medication and a known side effect. It will go away when I quit the med in another 2 or 3 months.

Agree with Sewtired's advice to have your husband be checked out by his PCP.

dont know what blood tastes like

but i would suspect the gel for the issues he thinks he senses
unless he has been messing with the nose using other substances
or has been in a place with something that the nose is 'remembering' and later labelled metal/copper
smelly things can stay in the nose for a long time before the nose sensors get cleaned out enough to not think it is still smelling them

pareidolia and apophenia
if the senses sense something the brain will try to interpret it
whatever the odor is sounds like he is thinking it is metallic/copper
I understand that.....most of your answers smell

There are several things that can cause a metallic taste. When I have this problem I drink orange juice. It does help, but I don't remember why.

I found this after a quick search online.

The summary is if the odd smells persist you should tell your doctor. There a lot of common issues that could cause this to happen that are nothing to worry about, but there also some very serious scary issues that could cause this as well that you would want to rule out.

Rule out simple things like the water tray of his cpap running dry ect... once you've taken away any environmental explanation your left with medical/norologic issues.

As one poster mentioned check all his medications for odd smell or taste as possible side effect as well

If it's really bad that it's effecting his health and wellbeing I would see a neurologist if the doctors you've talked with so far have not been of help.

I wish you well.

PS: to the people going back and forth at each other with little snarky remarks like kids on a school play ground , you know who you are. I have one suggestion. "Grow Up"

My first thought was possible dental issues. Could the added pressure of the CPAP cause his gums to bleed enough to taste blood? Might want to get a dental checkup and cleaning while you are exploring.

I get small sores similar to a pimple inside of my mouth on occasions. There is the taste of blood/metallic to the fluid that builds up inside. They go away in a day or two.
