Ideal APAP machine height

Post by Cpapian » Fri Jul 14, 2017 9:09 pm

I read my user manual the other day and was surprised to see the manufacturer recommends the APAP height should be lower than the mattress height.

Looking at my set up, the night table is about 9 inches higher than the mattress. I asked the DME about this. She said that recommendation was to guard against rainout. When the machine is lower any rainout would fall back into the machine not me.

I don't have a problem with rainout with my loaner machine. And, I put the hose over the headboard to take the pressure off my face.

I have a lower shelf on the night table, but it is so low I feel I will be inviting a lot of dust. It is so low the Roomba can't get under it.

I guess the risk is rainout versus dust.

What do you do with regard to positioning. Any other considerations, recommendations?

Mine is a little higher than my mattress...maybe not as much as where you want to put yours but it's maybe 4 or 5 inches higher.
No problems with it and having it lower doesn't necessarily guarantee no rain out anyway. If you get condensation in the hose gravity can help the water run back down into the humidifier but if you put an uphill in the path (like running the hose upwards or over the headboard or use a hose management hanging system) the water can't run uphill.

If you get rain out...there are ways to deal with it that involve warming up the hose in some way (several options).
You might not even get condensation in the hose anyway...so don't worry about it unless you have it happen to you.
It's annoying but won't hurt you.

I wouldn't want it high over my head but not because of rain out...I would be more afraid of pulling it off its perch over my head and having it land on my head.
But I do know a couple of people who have their machines sitting high on a shelf directly above their head. I think they bungee cord it to make sure they won't pull it down on their head.

A little extra moisture can be a lovely thing.
A damp frog is a happy frog.
Before cpap, I suffered all winter with itchy, dry nasal passages.
Best side effect of cpap? Not having 24/7 boogers any more!

Mine is right at the same height as this mattress. I get rainout once in a while and it wakes me up. If you are getting it once in a while, it's no big deal. If you are getting it regularly, it will disturb your sleep too much.

I haven't done any measurements, but this nightstand seems quite suitable for cpap. Some other folks have removed the top drawer of their multidrawer nightstand, replaced it with a plank of wood and just made that a shelf to lower the cpap a bit.

If rain-out is an issue, then yes, you need to put the machine lower than your head. Otherwise, it's not important where you put the machine.

I may be going out on a limb here, because there are so many options, especially. if your ruler is in CM's. I'd go with 12 inches off the floor, so the dust bunnies have to jump to get into the machine, and 6 inches below the top of the mattress top, giving rainout a chance to drain back to the HH Tank! Ha! HA!, Fat chance!

Or whatever nite stand that fits those specs. Jim

New furniture! Does that mean I can go shopping? Ha ha. My husband might have something to say about that.

I think I will let it rest on top of the night table for now and wait for inspiration to dream up something better.

Put the head of the bed on top of two concrete blocks, and the foot on the floor, that will solve the hight problem and help keep your stomach fluids lower. Win, Win!

I have used this nightstand for two years, now: https://www.wayfair.com/Perdue-Woodwork ... D1000.html I was so impressed with it, I bought one for my wife when she started using a machine this year. We store water in the bottom of one, and keep the bipap bags and spares in the other one.

========

that would be higher than many beds

there are far cheaper better suited small tables that would be below your actual bed height that can be found readily

dumbkoff xxy.. did you even look at this nightstand??????????????? Mouth in motion, mind at stop again! The machine does not go on top of the nightstand, it goes IN. There is a shelf and a spot for the hose to come out of, take a look, instead of opening your mouth with useless information.
