CPAP in the hospital, can't do without

Post by Krelvin » Wed Jul 12, 2017 6:44 pm

So I just spent two stints of 6 days each in the hospital over the last several weeks.

CPAP made it a lot of easier than it would have been.

For starters, I don't sleep on my back at all when at home, not even for a short period of time, in the hospital most of the time.

Also, there is a lot of waiting for something. And I am not a TV person unless there is a sports game on. Didn't feel like reading, watching videos. Just lying there on my back for hours on end.

Since I can't wear my glasses when the mask is on, I did get a lot of sleep.

CPAP made that work and I had my own machine for both stints the whole time.

When I was in the hospital for my cancer surgery, I brought my rx eye drops, as permitted by the hospital rules.
After dismissal, I requested a statement. They had charged me over $400 for drops from the pharmacy.
TWO, exactly 2 freaking DROPS! And they had provided none, (ZERO) as I had BROUGHT MY OWN.
I had to force an audit of the hospital pharmacy before they removed the bogus charges.
Fight when you know you are right.
It helped that the bullfrog actually retrieved my drops from my bag, and watched as I administered them.
Medicare covered my use of the hospital's S9 Autoset, so I left my new Airsense 10 at home.

Krelvin, please follow HoseCrusher's advice to stay out of the hospital. Glad to hear you are ok.

When I was hospitalized in May, my sister bought me some multivitamins to take. I was caught red-handed by two nurses.

One of them had the attitude she was simply going to overlook what I was doing. The other gave me a lecture that this was considered a med (the multivitamin was listed on my list of meds) and I just couldn't be doing this. Forgot exactly what I said but during the rest of my time, I just made sure I took it when I felt the chances of a nurse walking in was slim.

CF, I should have gotten an itemized bill but I was just so relieved to get out of there after a 5 day stay. God only knows what overcharges there were.

Regarding the use of using own machines in the hospital, I certainly could have used mine but didn't. Long story which I don't wish to get into as to why I didn't.

Again, glad you are ok Krelvin.

Every time I was in the hospital after starting cpap therapy, the hospital ALWAYS let me use my machine and mask.

And, Krelvin, thank goodness you are on the mend.
Keep doing whatever it takes to keep you out of those places.

You are way behind the times xxyzx. Most hospitals in the US want you to bring your xpap machine if you are there overnight. They check it over for safety and cleanliness. They simply do not have enough machines to go around. If you are there for shortstay (one of the many names for one day procedural like colonoscopy), then it's a little up in the air and varies by the hospital, your condition and the procedure. For instance, not everybody has a cpap for apnea. O2 may be a better choice when at the hospital.

Oh, and I can take my blood sugar meter, strips and lancets to use at the hospital now. Yay! My fingers hurt for weeks after my last 5 day stint.

Not to mention that the "Average Patient" has NO Clue what their pressure and other setting are. Much less the mask make / model. What is the point of wearing a cpap if things aren't set correctly?

i am surprised they let you do that

hospitals are like movie theatres
no outside food or drink and no outside cpaps
you have to pay them for theirs
More BS from end of alphabet boy.......I was hospitalized twice since I have been using CPAP. First time was unexpected and I didn't bring my CPAP.....NO CHARGE to use theirs, but their mask was terrible. Second time was for 4 days and I brought my own...again NO CHARGE.

ya know, he's a pretty good guide to the truth... just carefully examine everything he says, and for the most part...

BELIEVE THE OPPOSITE

last three times I was in the hospital, I took my cpap with me, used it in the ER, once in the OR, in CCU, and on the regular nursing floor... zero problems, except when one of the respiratory therapists offered to put water in it for me, and then said "where does the water go?" to which I replied "get out".

I used my own machine when I was in hospital for 3 months, this past winter. It was fine - except the hospital respiratory therapist knew "zero" about the Intellipap, that I was using as a backup machine at the time. Fortunately, I was able to take care of it myself.
