Administrator please help

Post by Mrs. Baldeagle » Sun Jul 09, 2017 11:39 pm

Hello! I am a Canadian cpap user living in France. I have tried to join the forum and have received the computer generated reply but not acceptance from the administrator. I have a real problem and need advice. I have tried a variety of masks and am currently using a full face mask. When I move in the night, the mask leaks and makes a terrible sound. It wakes up my husband, who is a light sleeper, and then he can't get back to sleep. It also wakes me up but that is of minor importance to the exhaustion I am causing him. Any advice and recommendations on quieting the mask would be greatly appreciated.

What mask and machine are you using--brand and model, with model number, please.

Is the disturbing airflow from a mask leak, or from the exhalation vent? Can you describe the sound?

I don't use a full face mask, but those who do may be able to assist you if you can provide further details.

I use a Resmed air sense 10 and the new f20 full face mask which I bought in England 2months ago. The noise is a whooshing sound which I think is caused by the mask slipping in the later parts of the night - 3 am onwards. I keep the appliance clean and adjusted but I can't figure out a way to stop the mask noise.

Ok, so I looked at some pictures of the F20. First thing that comes to mind is mask and headgear fit. Are you following the instructions received with the equipment, or have you checked the manufacturer's website for video tips on that? Are the headgear straps too loose, causing slippage as you change sleep position? Correct fit can be a fine line between too loose and too tight, though (because the mask doesn't inflate properly if held on too tightly), so you may need to try several adjustments to get it to the sweet spot.

Do your tinkering during the day sometime, not right at bedtime. You'll feel less stressed and not under the gun to get it right just when you're trying to relax into sleep. And test your adjustments in your sleep positions, not just in a sitting position.

Hope that helps for now,
Jean

Thanks for your reply, Jean. We are at the end of our tether. I will try your suggestions and see if that will help. It seems good, practical advice. Andrea

Andrea, I understand the frustration. There are so many little adjustments and learnings to figure out with cpap! But the longtimers here all counsel patience, and emphasize that everything is doable--at least, evenutally
Wishing you both better sleep,
Jean

Straps will stretch so daily adjustment before bed is needed. IF you are using an auto adjusting cpap (APAP) you need to adj straps at the highest pressure setting before bed. This will need to be done each nite before bed until the straps stop stretching.

And always try on FF masks when lying down - your face changes a lot then, plus relaxes more when you sleep. You might consider a Cpap pillow (Pappillow.com) if you think it would help, or make your own version of one.

You could try to re-register...

There is no 'administrator' or moderator here. The owners (who also own Cpap.com) believe we're adults and should work things out between ourselves, but when it comes to machanics of membership you can contact the Board, but of course need to be a member to do that. I'd just try again...

Patience is the key.

You can post - if you have a question post away.

Separate beds may not be your best solution---but how about a silencer?
A mask liner may muffle the noises from the cushion.
Pad a cheek.com sells some, but you can make your own by tearing
or cutting a gasket out of a soft paper towel or a clean, dry baby wipe (it happens)
Some of us here have cut a liner out of a clean old t-shirt.
(((Be careful not to nick the mask--maybe that is just me)))

You can make your own mask liners from old, well-used tee shirts or any other thin, soft cloth. I found a pattern I used when I made my liners at this site:

http://montfordhouse.com/cpap/diy-cotton-mask-liner.pdf

When I used them, my wife crocheted a small bag to put them in when we laundered them. We would throw them in with the whites, and then iron them dry which would return them to the original size and shape. Some people have purchased the Remzzz mask liners which are designed to be used only one night, but have managed to launder them and reuse them over and over. The liners helped with my leaks when I first started using a full face mask. When I changed to the mask I use now, I no longer needed mask liners.Your mask may still leak, but the noise will be much less.

The registration problem is a side effect of our IT team's valiant efforts to stop the relentless stream
of bot-generated spam that nearly crippled the forum awhile back.
Please be patient, and keep trying.
