CPAP/APAP

Post by Sleepqueen » Sun Jul 09, 2017 2:29 pm

I am on month two of CPAP treatment. I have mild sleep apnea (mostly hypopneas - 12 events per hour according to my initial sleep study) and was originally prescribed a pressure of 4:6, which I was told is extremely low. After about a month, I was feeling slightly better but still tired. My pressure was then increased to 6:8. At that point, I was waking up in the middle of the night wide awake. I went back the next week and they gave me an APAP test machine to figure out what my numbers needed to be. It was the best week of sleep in my entire life! I slept deep every night and hardly woke up at all. That was my biggest struggle prior to the test machine and now again, I am waking up often. I turned the test machine back in after a week and they told me they would read the data and update my machine the next day or so. I went home feeling a little worried (and almost like a CPAP addict lol) thinking I had to go back to my own machine with the old numbers. They called me the next day and said my number needed to be at 6.7 and adjusted it wirelessly. That was 3 weeks ago. I am back to sleeping pretty much the same I did before the test with the APAP. I am now also struggling with the occasional mask leak or having issue with my mask vent (Respironics Wisp) shooting air at me which causes me to wake up. The vent drives me CRAZY! I am frustrated that I am still feeling the same. Which is even more frustrating after knowing how good I felt after the APAP! I'm not sure if my issue is the mask, machine, or both. It seems from what I've read that most people have CPAP vs APAP. Also, my doctor did not seem to be fan of the APAP machine when I asked her about it before I started treatment. I do not have any other data other than the minimal data I get from the Resmed website. I have read about Sleepyhead but am unsure if that works with my machine or if it would be useful with my sleep apnea being mild. I am not sure where to go from here. I have had great compliance with this treatment and have tried to stay positive but lately it has been a struggle.

Sure sounds like the update didn't go through.

When you wake up, can you read the pressure on your machine's display?

Which model machine do you have???

Yes, I am able to see on the screen that the update did go through and my pressure is set at 6.7. I have the Resmed Airsense 10.

I do believe it has an SD card slot so I will try to get set up with Sleepyhead software. I will check out the links. Thanks!

I think you mean CPAP....If APAP or Elite, Sleepyhead software will work...If it says CPAP, it's a brick and minimal data is available.

So if it is a CPAP machine, then Sleephead will not work?

what does it say in the bottom right hand corner, you are on a trial, so it can be swapped for a better machine, if needed.

that's the brick, you want the AutoSet or AutoSet for Her. Ring the DME and ask, you may need to go back to the doctor and get your prescription changed or go to another doctor and/or DME They are a;; on the same insurance code, so get the better auto cpap or also called apap one.

I did mean the CPAP, of course; that cussed tremor strikes again.

I will reach out to my DME and doctor to see if there is anything that can be done to get another machine. I am worried I will be told it may take time to see results after they changed my pressure. The thing that stands out to me is how fantastic I felt and slept on just one week of APAP and how I have not had even close to that experience on CPAP. Is that common to have such a day and night experience with these?

Help! So I called my DME today and explained the situation. That I am still feeling the same on the CPAP as I did before the test machine to figure out my pressure setting. I explained that I never slept better than I did on the test machine (even on the first night I was out like a rock) and asked if the auto adjusting machine was an option. They said that first, it was a more expensive option (I am willing to pay whatever to get some quality sleep). Then they mentioned something about it not having an insurance code. Lastly, that it was not always the best option in treating events throughout the night (I cannot remember the specifics about why). This was the same spiel I received from my doctor before I began treatment. They suggested I try a BIPAP and said that they would be surprised if I didn't feel the same if not better on the BIPAP if I responded so well to APAP. I have done research on CPAP and APAP. BIPAP I know nothing about. Is this guidance correct or am I being misled? I am getting so frustrated. I am on over two months of this back and forth and no progress has been made. I have had perfect compliance but the past week or so I am now pulling the mask off my face mid-night. The DME thought this was because I could not handle the pressure. I really don't believe I am having issues tolerating it (it's super low anyways). I could really use some help/guidance/insight!
