Talk to me about APAPs

Post by techno-snoreus » Mon Jul 13, 2009 11:48 am

Just had a re-titration study done after 4 and a half years on the hose. Will be getting script for new machine, and want an APAP. Insurance will cover 100%, so I want to get a really good one with data capabilities, the works. I really appreciate all responses, seeing as how I'm too lazy to go and search the information out myself.

I have the M Series with A Flex. It is great.

From an older thread viewtopic.php?p=307168#p307168,
these are the APAPs:

AUTOPAP ("autotitrating cpap" or "APAP") machines which record full data:
Respironics REMstar Auto M series with A-Flex.
ResMed S8 Autoset Vantage and Autoset II
Puritan Bennett GoodKnight 420E
Covidien/Puritan Bennett Sandman Auto
DeVilbiss IntelliPAP Autoadjust

Thanks for the reply. I guess I wasn't clear on what info I am looking for. What my real question is "Which auto would you pick, and why?". I've been partial to Respironics in the past, but I am willing to look at every available option. I want data capabilites, so which machine has the best software? In the immortal words of Johnny 5 "NEED INPUT".

I'm really happy with my M-Series Auto, although I use it mostly in CPAP mode. I get better numbers in CPAP. (I plan to run APAP a few nights every 6 months or so to monitor pressure needs.) And I'm happy with the data Respironics machines deliver. I have the A-flex model, though running in CPAP limits me to C-flex.

Having the Auto w/A-flex gives you lots of options.

BTW, the list posted leaves out the M-series Auto with C-flex...

Do the M-Series still have issues with leaky humidifiers? What kind of data does the software deliver? It's been so long since I did anything remotely related to this stuff that I feel out of the loop.

I know my husband has an autoset II by resmed. I think it's an elite 8. So far we haven't had any problems with it. The way they programed it at the DME place, we really can't get all the data out of it that we wanted--and i don't know about the software as we've never used the card it had with it. (The DME place didn't even have the equipment to read it and didn't know who had)

Scroll through here for examples of Respironics software data. There are several pages. In addition to apneas and hypopneas Encore Viewer will show vibratory snores and flow limitations.
I have M series humidifier and no issues with leaks.

Well, I can tell you I ordered an Autoset II. It's being delivered next Tuesday. 1st time setup, etc.
The why I got that one was partly by suggestion of one of the techs at the sleep center, also by my research of Resmed, and the features of their products. Of course, the real test will start next week, but they seem to be the logical choice to me.

Good catch, Link.
I went back to my original post at
viewtopic.php?p=307168#p307168
to see what I'd said. Regarding the M series Auto, I wrote it like this:
Respironics REMstar Auto M series -- with or without "A-Flex."

To clarify:
All M series Autos have C-Flex.
Only the M series Auto that says "A-Flex" has A-Flex (and C-Flex.)

techno-snoreus, if it were me and I were getting an autopap, I'd get one of these three:

Respironics REMstar Auto with A-Flex.
Encore Viewer software and card reader
I would not get the integrated M series humidifier. I'd get a separate Fisher & Paykel HC150 humidifier.

ResMed S8 AutoSet II with "EPR" and "Easybreathe"
I'd not bother getting the software for a ResMed machine. The data from the LCD window on the machine itself would give me all the info I need.

Covidien Sandman Auto
I'd get the "Soft Sandman Series" software.

For those last two (ResMed and Covidien) I might, or might not, decide to get the integrated humidifier. Probably not. Probably I'd choose to use the separate Fisher & Paykel HC 150 humidifier with those machines, too. If I got the integrated humidifier for the ResMed machine, I'd want the H4i humidifier.

Those would just be my personal preferences.

What does APAP stand for and how is it differnet than a CPAP? WHat is the differece between a CPAP and a Bi-PAP?

I have a ResMed S8 Autoset II, and love it. I have the EPR set at 2 and run it on auto with the settings at 8-12.I do have the software and like being able to read the detailed graphs, the summary graphs, etc. I read the LED data each morning just to make sure my numbers are good. I use the humidifier H4i at a setting of 2. A very good machine for sure.

Up near the top of this thread is a blue "bar" with a yellow light bulb that says "CPAPopedia keywords". One of the words is "APAP". Click on it (or any or them) and it will take you to a thread/post with the definition.
