How do we handle Colds & Stuffy Noses?

Post by G00fy217 » Thu Feb 17, 2005 3:33 pm

A good question came up in another topic, and I find it to be an interesting question.... What do we do when we get Colds & our noses are Stuffed up? I am claustrophobic, so don't tell me to use a Full Face Mask! It will not happen! What else is there? I don't have a cold now.... but curious to know what I should do when it happens..... Living in Chicago and the weather being as g00fy as it is (no not me you silly people) I could catch a cold in the next day or next week or whenever..... then what?

Well, there's the Oracle oral mask as an alternative to full face masks, for mouthbreathing treatment air. But... having to stuff nose plugs up the snout to prevent nasal snorting-air-leaks (whew, don't even want to think about that with a cold!) or having to wear a nose clip with the Oracle - not very comfortable, imho.

G00fy,

I assume you already have a heated humidifier. If you don't already have one, get the Aussie heated hose. It allows you to turn you humidifier up without any rainout. I recently have severe nasal congestion and when I pumped all that humidity through my Swift it cleared out my nose just fine. I could breath better at night than I could during the day. I'll bring the hose along to show you at the AWAKE meeting next week.

Good that you're thinking about this before it is a problem.
Sincerely,

Crank up that heated humidifier and aussie heated hose.

Stay away from sick people, Practice bio security.

Go to the steam room at the gym daily if thats an option.

eliminate sources of allergins, cats, dogs, carpet, dust

Avoid foods that cause sensitivity. caffeine milk, corn , Chocolate .

A way to tell if you are sensitive to a certain food. Avoid it in all meals for 2 weeks. Milk/whey for instance is in many products. after 2 weeks drink a large glass of milk. Observe what happens. Sinus, ear infection, gas, etc.

Same for chocolate, corn, soy, You'll be surprised.

Many nasal sprays list cold as a side effect.

Muckmeister - Thank You!! It is a bit hard to visualize all these things!! I need a picture book on cpap gadgets!!!

I look forward to meeting you in person next week and discussing a bunch more topics with you regarding all this! I know there will be a Respornics DME there with some of his products (I think that's how you spell it?? ) Hmmm!! I am not sure about the "porn" in that word, but yikes... I don't know for sure!!

Any how..... we will have a speaker there with some products. I am also going to have Coffee, Tea, & Decaf available. I am just a nice person.... sometimes

See you then!

So, no one uses the router attachment on their Dremel [tm] tool to clear out the sinuses?

This is actually a good topic, and it's one of the reasons I started with full face masks before ever trying anything nasally oriented. If you're too claustrophobic for a FF mask, try some of the other suggestions on here.

Worse comes to worst, do without the CPAP for a couple of days, and try to sleep on your side or inclined or some other position which may LESSEN the apnea a little bit.

Liam, who could write a book on nasal obstruction. But he' snot going to.
