Steralization

Post by hecate » Wed Jan 17, 2007 7:41 pm

Has anybody used http://www.milton-tm.com/motherandbaby/ ... se_why.htm or any similar products to sterilize your cpap equipment?

I recently lost the ability to taste for a while. It only came back after I purchased a new humidifyer water container. I only ever used distilled water so I'm now paranoid about my water container.

Any other suggestions on how to sterilize?

Thanks
Liz

sterilize

You ask how to sterilize rather than asking IF you need to sterilize.

The answer is that there is no reason to sterilize.

Cleaning occasionally is all that is needed.

I don't sterilize, my germs are mine, we get along with each other. I wash and dry things once and a while, and use distilled water in the HH. Jim

I clean hose, mask, humidifier and foam filter with a solution of 3 parts water and 1/4 c. vinegar once a week and use distilled water in the humidifier. Haven't had any problems yet.

Not being able to taste is not fun, although it is great for dieting.

I don't want to go through that again so I want to occasionally sterilize. The water looks cloudy in the reservoir that cleaning with soap and water doesn't fix.

For some it doesn't seem necessary to do anything other than top up, but for me it doesn't seem to be enough.

Thanks
Liz

Milton is a "stable solution of sodium hypochlorite", which means that it is an expensive form of diluted laundry bleach. I question whether it is safe to use this product on silicone and other soft materials used in CPAP masks. Stick with 3:1 white vinegar solution, it's cheaper and it is commonly used on CPAP equipment.

If the water in your resovoir looks cloudy and that doesn't go away with cleaning, perhaps it's time for a new resovoir...?

I would suspect the water you are using before anything else. There is a school of thought that says you actually run the risk of making the thing you are trying to clean less clean by handling it and exposing it to the outside world. Wash the thing out once in a while, use the best quality of water you can find, and go from there.

taste

Are you saying that you think the water in the HH was related to your loss of taste?

Could it be coincidence?

Lots of things can hapen in the 8 or so hours you ard on pap.
I don't understand the connedtion.
