Humidifier additive?

Post by LilBuckaroo » Sat Feb 12, 2005 1:27 pm

I would like to know if there is anything that I can add to my humidifier to serve as a nasal decongestant that would not damage my humidifier or mask. Humidifier is a "HumidAire 2i", mask is an "UltraMirage FF".
I have and use "Flonase", "AllegraD", generic Benadryl and a saline nasal spray. The Allegra and the Benadryl seem to work fairly well. The Flonase seems to only work temporarily. Plus, I'm not a big fan of nasal sprays.
I would like to have something blowing on my face the entire time that I am "on the hose".

Instead of the nasal saline spray try some AYR Gel....if works great and lasts all night long...simply put a little on a Q-Tip and apply inside of your nose.

I would be leery of adding anything other than saline... If you use saline you will have to make sure that you clean the crust out of the humidifier... Other additives might react with the plastic or worse cause irritation to your lungs...

Mike has asthma and worries about irritating his lungs... No liam not those kind of lungs

I find a shot of Glenfeddich 18 yr single malt in the reservoir does wonders. Smells good as well. Reminds me of my homeland.

Thanks for your reading my post and your advice. I knew that I could count on ya'll to try and steer me right. Didn't think it was a good idea, but one never knows, does one?

Flonase and the other prescription nasal steroid sprays are long term solutions, used once a day. I've been told it can take 2 weeks before they begin working well. I've used Vancenase first and now Nasonex for 10 years.

Nothing wrong with setting up a small fan in the bedroom. Our central AIR unit is on its last legs, so we kept the house warmer than we liked last summer. We added a small room fan to blow air at our bed. It did increase the rainout in my tubing, so I had to turn down the humidiifier a bit, but otherwise posed no problem at all.

Well, if you want to make sure you never have to worry about apnea again, you could always put a mixture of chlorine bleach and ammonia in there.

Liam, always looking for the long term solution.

(NOTE! I usually don't do this, because I think it's clear when I'm joking, but just in case... DO NOT do this. Mixing bleach and ammonia releases chlorine gas which WILL KILL YOU. My suggestion above is entirely in jest.)

How about a little eucalyptus oil in the water chamber?

I'm certainly not going to complain. If it weren't for people with sick senses of humor, I'd NEVER get a laugh.

Yeah, there seems to be a lot of that going around.

Liam, who is apparently contagious.
