Severe sleep apnea - tourette syndrome and depression

Post by badim » Tue May 09, 2017 10:24 am

Hey ,
before a few months I am diagnosed with severe sleep apnea AHI = 35, and oxygen saturation = 85%.
I Tried 10 days of CPAP with two types of masks, and I can't succeed to use it. I get it out of my face during the night....
I am suffering from depression, anxiety and tourette syndrome with severe tics. (muscle spasm, vocal tics, movement tics).
I wake up one time over the night, and sleep something like 7-9 hours. I feel very bad during the morning, hard to concentrate and many of tics and vocal tics. Also I have vertigo sometimes
Someone here have a tourette syndrome/tics and sleepa pnea?
the treatment of the osa reduce, the number of the tics during the day?
what about the level of eneregy and the depression/anixety?

thank you.

Have you seen a neurologist who also knows about apnea? You have problems not generally seen here (Tourette's) though depression is often heard about because many people with apnea were told they had depression before the apnea diagnosis. One thing I don't know is if Tourette's is active when you are asleep - do tics and vocalizations continue? That would certainly affect Cpap therapy, and wearing a mask, but I think the right doctor might help.

Many beginning CPAP users, who have no other health problems, have trouble with taking the mask off during the night. Many of them don't even realize it until they wake up in the morning. Over a period of time, their brain becomes accustomed to the mask, and the problem goes away. What you are experiencing is not a reason to give up.

There are many types of mask. Finding the right mask and getting it sized and adjusted properly is usually the biggest challenge for CPAPers.

For the next step, please fill out your equipment profile - https://www.cpaptalk.com/ucp.php?i=prof ... pment_info

Ten days without success is not much of a trial. Fill our your equipment profile and let's discuss this further.

It's very difficult for most neurotypical people to get used to sleeping with CPAP and you have additional challenges. However, that does NOT give you a pass from using CPAP. It takes time and work and failure is not an option. All of the evidence points to the fact that treating your sleep apnea will save your life First, and will help your other symptoms.

So you must resolve to make this work for you, even if it is a slow, difficult, uphill battle.

Start with the mask. Of the two you've tried, learn how to adjust the better one properly (see my blog hints). If you cannot make either work, get another and insist that your DME help fit you properly, lying down with the machine on at your highest set pressure. Then resolve to practice during waking hours daily to get used to it.

Wear it every night. Expect lots of wake ups. If you remove the mask, put it back on or get out of bed. Put the mask back on when you return to bed. Don't expect to sleep like a baby in one night. Count the little victories. Fewer wake ups, longer times before waking up. Step by step. Keep going!

We can help with specific issues (mask leaks, discomfort, feeling of suffocation). But YOU have to do the work.

No, but I saw many neurologists before. When I sleep I don't have Vocal tics But I think that I move a lot...
I want to try Oral appliance for sleep apnea, If it doesn't help me I'll tray Cpap again more seriously for long period of time.

I found it took 2 months to start to get on track. I needed to desensitise my body to cpap. the first 10 days was a struggle to keep the mask on and get more than 2 hours sleep at a time.
