AHI is higher in REM?

Post by mibbim » Mon May 08, 2017 12:18 pm

Hi, several times I woke up after I had a dream, and checked the AHI, it seems always the highest among whole sleep period. Usually we are dreaming at the REM, I know there is an exception too. But in my case, my AHI after the dream always the highest. Does anyone have the same experience or have an explanation for it?

yes same for me .. apneas are more in rem and usually more in the period of rem early in the AM ... the last REM is usually the deepest sleep.
If you're not part of the solution you're just scumming up the bottom of the beaker!

Get the Clinicians manual here : http://apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-press ... tup-manual

I seem to be in REM most of my sleep. I always feel tired and wake up several times a night. Cpap isn't what I was hoping for.

How long have you been using CPAP?

If you've just started, it's worth realizing that many new CPAPers have what is often referred to as REM-rebound. If your apnea is significantly worse in REM than non-REM sleep, your body may have been avoiding going into REM sleep for a very long time when your OSA was still untreated. Now that the CPAP prevents most of your apneas and hypopneas from happening, your body realizes that it is safe to go into REM, and it's trying to make up for years of REM-deprived sleeping.

When you say you wake up several times a night, do you mean 2-4 times? Or do you mean 10+ times? Or somewhere in between?

And how far apart would you guesstimate the wakes are? 90 minutes or more apart? Or are your wakes much closer than that?

My apneas mostly occur in REM too. For years I have struggled with daily headaches/migraines. I just started CPAP and I'm hoping to get some relief from this torturous existence that I have been living. Good luck my friends! https://sleepfoundation.org/sleep-news/ ... -migraines

Diagnosed mild with AHI of 7, and AHI of 26 during REM

Chronic migraine, fatigue, and headaches, hoping to resolve these problems or get better with sleep apnea treatment.

to robysue... my sleep habit is awful. Probably only once a year can sleep whole night if I was really really really tired. Usually I can fall into sleep ok since I am tired when I go to bed around 10:30 pm. Then depends on the 'good' or 'bad' day, I will wake up after 3 hours, then go back to sleep if I was able to, then wake up after 2 hours, then 1 hour if I am lucky. I have used cpap for 2 and months now. I was able to sleep 3 to 4 hours prior using cpap, then always wake up after that, then in a bad day, wake up every 2 and 1 hour. My sleep doctor suggested me to see the sleep behavioral clinic. I made an appo, but haven't decide to keep the appo or not since it's out of network of my insurance.

Funny you mention... I have to help wake my wife up for work at about 4:30 each morning and then I go back to sleep. I go to bed around 11 each evening. The period from 11-4:30 i usually do not have any events (or maybe couple short ones). After waking up that brief period between 4:40-6:30 (when I get up) it is like my DEEPEST sleep (and i have more AHIs during that time). I also monitor my heart rate using my apple watch each night and that is also the period where my heart rate dips into the 50s (my lowest). It seems like my body is trained to do that deep REM period after my brief wake up to ensure my wife is up.

The U of M sleep Behavioral clinic after you see a PHD psychiatrics evaluation. They will plan a 8 to 10 sessions of CBT, short for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It's a non-medicine treatment. I am not going to take any drugs for my sleep pb, so that's one of the option. However, I am not sure if it works for me or not since this pb lasts forever.
