Face mask coming apart; what glue to use?

Post by GregL65 » Mon Apr 24, 2017 3:03 am

I have a face mask made by Fisher & Paykel. The badge also says "Simplus". It looks like this one:

The soft, rubbery part of the face mask is separating from the hard plastic part. What glue is best for putting them back together? Epoxy? Super glue? Plastic modeling cement? Elmers?

Are you referring to the silicone cushion that's normally removable for cleaning (and eventual replacement)? Most of the glues you cited won't work and shouldn't be used in any case as there should be a thin plastic ring (or something similar) holding the cushion in place, and it normally is removable to clean or change the cushion at regular intervals. Have you looked at the "Replacement parts" at top right on the pg you linked?

Which specific part are you talking about? The "cushion" is a replaceable part of the mask.

But, I've always used Krazy Glue with almost everything I need to fix.......and have had pretty good luck with it.

According to this cleaning video for Fisher & Paykel's "Simplus" CPAP mask, the soft silicone part is not taken off of the hard plastic part:

After taking a closer look, I think it may have originally been heat sealed. There are small holes all around the hard plastic part, with pegs in the soft silicone part that go all the way through the holes. Where it's coming apart, those soft silicone pegs look torn.

It's next to impossible to get silicone rubber to stick to anything. However, there are SCUBA masks that have the lenses bonded to the silicone frame with glue of some sort. Never say any of that glue offered up as a repair item. Likely a complicated process. Best approach would likely be to break out the spare mask and order a new one.

Do you have insurance ? Most insurance will let you replace this part of the mask
every 30 days. Even without insurance it's not all that expensive I believe our host
cpap.com list that cushion for about $32 + shipping.

GregL, if you go to cpap dot com you will see the replacement cushion for simplus is sold separated from the plastic, if you glue it you wont be able to change cushion in a future.

I know the glue that will be able to glue silicone to plastic but I don't remember the name (my memory is not a wonder). I can get it tomorrow at work, it is made to glue flexible things together. The glue carbonman suggest wont work ( I have use it) because it will dry rigid and silicon is flexible.

EDIT: it is the GOOP adhesive, there are several kinds of Goop, you wil find one for your need. I used the one for shoe repair to glue a new sport shoe years ago, it is still glued after all that time.
