Tablet/phone use before bed

Post by joroco » Fri Apr 21, 2017 7:55 pm

Joy is still getting good results from her CPAP readings by putting away Her Ipad 3 hours before going to bed. Her AHI has dropped from an average of 10 to 5 or below with much better results on Her CA's and Cheyne Stokes Respiration. Television does not affect the results only the small screen usage. Any other comments from anyone that has experienced this affect would be appreciated. Joy has just swapped from a Resmed F10 to the new F20 FFM so will comment on Her thoughts after giving it a good trial.

google blue light and melatonin
best not to use smart phones/ipads or tv for a period before bed. if you must, use warm settings in control to cut the blue light.

I must be the exception.
No matter what I look at, I zonk within minutes of hitting the pillow.
Late night/evening coffee is my nemesis, but that is all.
Even dark chocolate has no effect.

What about caffeine intake?
I find having caffeine any time after lunch seems to affect my sleep. Lunch time is borderline OK.

Can't comment on any experience since I've not tracked this in my own data.

But I can contribute a hypothesis: The small screen is much, much closer to Joy's eyes than the TV is. Hence it is possible that the blue light from the small screen is more damaging to her melatonin cycle than the TV.

I read on my phone/pad often before bed. Doesn't seem to bother me, but then I rarely have trouble falling asleep in the first place. Whatever works for you! or her.

Even the blue light control thing that was added to my Fire doesn't seem to make a difference. If I look at the screen more than a few minutes (such as setting it up for alarms or sleep sounds), it takes me that much longer to fall asleep. Furthermore, with my eye damage, when I shut it off, I have zero night vision at all with the GOOD eye for almost half an hour. I do not have the same problem with the TV screen nor the ereader.

They make Computer glasses that SAY they screen the bad rays out, I have two pairs I use 3.00 Readers. I don't know if they help. They do change my blue tint to yellow, me eyes are so messed up I'm not a good test subject, maybe I need to put my foil hat on too. Never mind I'm wearing it. Jim

joroco and fellow posters...
I read this thread with no prior info on this subject...but find it interesting.

On a related issue...there's some info suggesting WiFi radio waves can influence sleep as well.

We (RV park where I live) recently switched to cable internet and I had to buy a router. But chose to use ethernet cables rather then WiFi mode. I haven't noticed any sleep improvement, but I just feel better knowing my body is not being irradiated 24 hours a day with WiFi signals.

Palerider,
I should have expected that response...and I agree, we live in a world with many unknown issues/hazards. There is real science regarding cell phones as well as living under high power lines. And I know cosmic rays can't be avoided.

But for $5 for an ethernet cable...I was able to eliminate WiFi generated within my house. Future science may reveal the truth...but for now, all we can do is rely on gut feelings.
CN

PS: Google WiFi and insomnia...a surprising amount of discussion. Should be of concern to cpap users who have issues with sleep.

I prefer wired connections, simply because they're faster but it's hard to shove an rj45 into my cell phone.
