user name problem

When I posted for the first time under a user name I've used elsewhere frequently in the past, but never here, as I'm brand-new on board today -- the post said I'd posted before as someone else, RogerSC. I looked him up and he's been here for awhile. I don't want us to get mixed up with each other so what do I do?
If I try a different user name wont the site still think I've now posted under a 3rd name and am still Roger? What did I do wrong and how fix? Did I come through the wrong door? Usually sites will tell you if a name is already taken:(
