AirFit P10 Too Tight

Post by Grouch » Sat Apr 15, 2017 10:11 am

While I'm a woman, I apparently have an enormous head. Guess I need that to house my gigantic brain.

I love the P10. It so minimal and light weight, but even moving the straps fully apart and fiddling, the headgear is still too tight. I have the "for her" version. I checked the specs on the male version and both appear to be exactly the same length - 19.25". Is that right? Seems like it would be slightly larger. Can anyone verify that?

I've read about the straps stretching out over time, so I've tried pulling on them to stretch them out. The straps springs right back to the same size! They make marks on my face. I've tried adding strap covers and it seems to make it worse. Makes the fit tighter I guess.

I've been using the Nuance with no problems and the Swift FX before that. This is more a comfort issue than anything. With my Resmed PR1 I was getting low amounts of leaking with the P10 as seen in Sleepyhead.

Has anyone faced this issue? If so, have you found any workarounds?

The headgear stretches out as it is worn.
To speed this process, I rinsed with a hair conditioner and wrapped it tightly around a fat towel to dry.
Yes, I used the same process recommended to save a shrunken wool sweater.

Soak your straps then hang them around something that stretches them ... (basketball ?). When they dry they will be longer. We tend to do the opposite, soak them in very hot water and then allow to dry... they shrink. I have read on here some of the reviews for the P10 and the for her version is shorter than the original one. The fabric does stretch on its own over time, that's why we have to "shrink" them .
Started cpap in 2010.. still at it with great results.

Thanks ladies for the suggestions! I'll give them a try.

I also sent my DME a request to exchange this for the blue version. I had trialed that version at my fitting appointment and didn't notice this problem. However, I didn't have it on very long, either. I've been using this mask for about 10 days now.

I had the blue straps version and there was nothing that really worked to stretch those straps enough. So for about a year, I switched every 3-4 days to a different mask while the slight bruising recovered. Finally gave up on that and went back to the Swift. Most of the family can't fit into ordinary hats, so it's not a surprise.

Well, that's discouraging. I really, really like this mask. I was hoping for quick, easy fix. I guess I haven't run into this before, as my Nuance and other masks had adjustable straps.

That sounds familiar. Mabye we're related. I've never worn hats, because they always perch precariously on top of my head and fall off.

CPAP.com says the headgear is the same size. My 1,5 month old blue one measures 21.25.

Shave your head!

Just kidding...

Maybe modify the headgear by cutting the back and sewing a velcro fastener on each end to give you an adjustable closure?

I seem to have finally stretched out the head gear the proper amount to fit comfortably around my big head. Thanks all for your suggestions. Due to other problems I switched back to my Nuance mask in the middle of last night. While I was happy with it before trying the P10, it now seems clunky and I don't like that the straps get so close to my eyes.

Guess I'm now a P10 convert.

The headgear for the men and woman's are not the same size.I have received the ladies, 18 1/2" and 19 1/2" long. The men's, 21 1/2" and 22 1/2". I receive the men's from the Veteran's Administration in a complete P 10 mask package. The ladies I buy just the headgear from a local DME.

That's great news! Thanks, Bobby. The specs show both of them being the same length (19.25"), which seemed odd. I was hoping the men's might be a bit longer. I just ordered the headgear on Amazon, as I've already used my allotment on the women's version.

Hair makes a difference. I have had to loosen my adjustable (other masks) after getting a perm.
Now, I pull my long hair back into a ponytail, which I undo once the mask is on.

Good news on the headgear and DME fronts!

I'd fired off an email Friday night to my DME asking about the difference in the men's and women's sizing. Just got a call from them this morning and they are sending out a blue one to me that was in an open package. Not used, just an open package. So I'll be able to test it out and see if it fits different. Of course now I've spent a good bit of time strenuously trying to stretch the pink bands, so it will be a bit hard to tell.

Thanks again, everyone, for all your help and suggestions.
