Welcome to the forum.

What mask are you using? Someone who uses the same kind may have useful advice for you.
Have you checked that the mask's exhalation vent is not being blocked by anything (sheets, hair, pillow, arm . . .)?
Is your headgear/mask on lightly enough to keep a seal, but not strapped tight to your face? There needs to be enough room for the mask to inflate a little. (Probably different for nose pillow style mask; I'm not familiar with those.)

An auto machine will adapt to you, yes. But you have been advised correctly: you will also need to adapt to the machine, in the sense that wearing the mask and learning to sleep with the machine are new skills that we all have to come to terms with.

Shutting, with careful fingers and benign,
Our gloom-pleas'd eyes, embower'd from the light,
Enshaded in forgetfulness divine

A wild guess is that your machine has Ramp turned on and is set to start the Ramp at a pressure of something like 4.

I tried the full face mask for one week, can't sleep at all. I changed to the nasal pillow, that makes a big difference, I can fall into sleep right away, but wake up 3, 4 hours later, then it depends on a good or bad night, can fall back to sleep right away or after hours.... is there a particular reason for using ffm for you? My AHI was 44 before, pretty scary, but at least now it stays under 3.

well, the first thing to do is tell yourself that what you're thinking is impossible, so try and figure out what is actually happening.

my guess is you're having an apnea event that's waking you up, implying your ramp pressure, and probably minimum pressure, is too low.

the machine is only in sync with you, it responds to your breathing.

Was the central apnea you had for decades ever treated with any sort of cpap machine?
Just how bad was the central apnea?
Confirmed by sleep study?
Is this machine your first of any sort of xpap machine?

How about using SleepyHead software and let's look to see exactly what is going on in detail?

You freekin idiot! What xxyzx experienced is NOT impossible.

When the machine stops while the mask is sealed onto the face, the pressure equalization between the lungs and the ambient air outside the machine creates a vacuum that indeed sucks the air out of the mask.

this, from an absolute moron that understands nothing about cpap therapy or operation.

go back to your supplements, at least you don't sound stupid when gibbering on about those.

I knew more about CPAP therapy than you'll ever hope to know you little idiot troll -- and all before you were even diagnosed ... now go to your shrink and get yourself some more happy drugs.

I'm sure dreamshitter posted something typically asinine, as is his ”style”, but I can't be bothered to read it.

Color of her words added by me.

I have experienced that exact "brick wall" feeling when ramp was set too low to be able to prevent obstruction during the transition to sleep. Ramp can be useful in some circumstances, but for me it did more damage than good, since I needed close to full pressure right away or I was unable to fall asleep. I believe that I would have a "central" as I started to drift off to sleep (not one that would show up on a sleep study--just a pause in breathing as I started to sleep) and that central would morph into an obstruction. Very unpleasant feeling, that.

But as Pugsy said, no way to know what is going on until it is seen. However, I would mention the possibility that the apnea might easily be mislabeled by a program if the event is mixed in nature, so that might need to be taken into consideration when interpreting results from a home machine.

PR and DS, I consider you both my friends, so I feel I should mention that it might be nice to try not to stink up threads started by newbies, if you can help it. Just sayin'. Not tryin' to moderate or anything. Just a friendly nudge.

what could the machine be trying to do that jolts me awake and makes it feel as if there is no air in the mask?
what does the data say just before you wake up?

You got SleepyHead installed and all the events are centrals????
Can you please share with us the detailed report so we can see what you are seeing.

Examples of how we like the reports to be organize here in this thread.

SleepyHead will work on Windows XP...I am pretty sure.
Download it and at least try it.

Or go over to the apneaboard and read up on how to request ResScan.
http://www.apneaboard.com/adjust-cpap-p ... tup-manual
There's a link right below the list of ResMed machine manuals they have available that takes you to a page that explains what you have to do to request ResScan software.

When I first got my ASV machine I had issues with the machine fighting me as to when to inhale and when to exhale. Now after 2.5 years I often have to check to be sure the machine is on. WE HAVE LEARNED TO LIVE WITH EACH OTHER IN HARMONY. It took some time and effort. I did use SleepyHead with windows XP, Then Windows 7, and now Windows 10.
Meeting with Sleep Specialists was of little help, even the good ones. Learning to work with Sleepyhead and advice from the good folks here, especially Pugsy, and making my own adjustments got me to where I am now. Original diagnosis AHI 84, now treated AHI 1 (+2 or -1).
Start by getting Sleepyhead and learning to use it and to post reports here for advice.
Also fill in your equipment in your profile using the option for words instead of pictures. It really helps if we know your equipment and settings.
It can be difficult in the begining to learn to live with PAP therapy. But it is easier than learning to die without the therapy.
