Stomach Sleeping for Sleep Study?

Post by mwarn » Tue Apr 04, 2017 8:05 am

I have my first ever sleep study scheduled for tonight and am wondering, can you sleep on your stomach with all of the sensors, belts, etc. hooked up?

Although it might be bad, I've been a stomach sleeper my whole life and it's the only way I can fall asleep. I also have severe sleep onset insomnia - which is the reason I'm having the study done. I have Ambien to take for the study - which I've only taken once in the past - but still do not think I will fall asleep if I'm forced to sleep on my back or side. I don't want to psych myself out, but that is my biggest concern - not being able to fall asleep.

Thanks

I would think it will not be a problem, I told my tech that I was a side sleeper. He woke me up in the middle of the night and asked me to sleep on my back, after about 2 hours of not sleeping he said it was ok to get back on my side...

I've done 3 sleep studies (2 in a hospital, 1 in a private lab) and 2 of them they requested that I sleep on my back (when apnea is worst for the majority of people). The 3rd was a bi-level titration so they let me sleep on my side because I was already diagnosed by then so the goal was to find the right pressures for the sleep position I actually use every night.

To answer your specific question, I think it would be difficult (but not impossible) to sleep on your stomach during a sleep study. You would need to keep your face at the edge of the pillow facing left or right.

I slept on my stomach for mine. That's how they diagnosed hypoventilation as opposed to apnea.

Please let us know how it worked out.

If you are prescribed a CPAP, I can give you good advice on how to sleep on your stomach while wearing the mask.
