Types of Apneas

Post by Coloneldad » Sat Mar 25, 2017 9:30 pm

I have the app on myy phone "Dreammapper" which before anyone starts on their opinion of it, is the one the Veterans Administration pushes me to get. It's not necessarily the one I get to choose.

My question is this: In the app it lists under my AHI readings three different catagories. "Clear Apneas" "Obstructed Apneas" and "Hypopneas". Can someone help me understand the differences in these?

Thank you.

Briefly:
Clear apneas = central apneas = signals from the brain to breathe are lost; cpap doesn't help these.
Obstructed apneas = the upper airway is blocked, preventing proper air circulation to/from the lungs, one struggles to breathe; cpap holds the airway open to prevent these apneas.
Hypopneas = partial obstructions of the upper airway; cpap holds the airway open.

Check out the CPAP DefInitions page and the CPAP Wiki page; links are at the top right part of the forum page. Or Google for additional suggestions.

O soft embalmer of the still midnight,
Shutting, with careful fingers and benign,
Our gloom-pleas'd eyes, embower'd from the light,
Enshaded in forgetfulness divine
