What is 90% pressure setting on a CPAP machine?545KP

Hello. I was diagnosed with mild sleep apnea 2 and a half years ago. I use a Respironics M machine without a humidifier and a nasal mask. Pressure 9 with a ramp up from 5. Recently I moved and my allergies started up. I got pneumonia and have been having difficulty keeping my oxygen level up when doing moderate physical activity. So I saw a nurse practioner in a pulmonary practice for the first time. She took the latest info from my CPAP and then returned it to me. The next time I used it and checked the info the following morning I had a higher than usual ahi and a new info category called 90% pressure. That category result was 9.5. Tonight when I hit the ramp button, instead of being 5, it was 4.2. I am thinking the NP changed something when checking the results of my CPAP use.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like they changed some settings.

Don't know which model you have, but here are some text instructions I typed up years ago for the Auto w/C-Flex.
There was a later M-Series Auto w/A-Flex, but these should get you into the setup to look around.
Be sure to write down all of the settings that are in your machine before changing anything, in case you have to reset them.
The instructions at the bottom of this list are for resetting the data, in case you're inclined to do so.

Hold down the <- -> buttons while plugging in the little power cord in the back, wait for 2 beeps release buttons. Then press the + key to enter setup mode, use the <- -> buttons to move to the next field, use the -/+ keys to decrease/increase values, when set press the On/Off button to exit Setup.

Therapy Mode = CPAP/AUTO
CPAP Pressure = NN (only appears in CPAP mode).
AutoMax = 20 cm (default)
AutoMin = 4.0cm (default)
C-Flex Setting = Off, 1, 2 or 3
Ramp Time = (0:05 to 0:45)
Ramp Start Pressure = 4.0cm (can be from 4cm to AutoMin pressure).
Mask Alert = On/Off (beeps on large leak, mask removal).
Auto Off = Off (turns off machine on large leak/mask removal) Suggest leaving it "Off"
Split Night Time = Off (options are Off, 120, 180, 240) Should be "Off"
Show AHI/Leak = On (enables logging to display) Suggest leaving it "On"
Patient Reminder = Off (days to remind you that you get a new mask w/Insurance).

To reset LCD Therapy data (does NOT erase any data from SmartCard):

1. Hold down the (<-) (->) buttons while plugging in the power on the back,
wait for 2 beeps or 5 seconds, release buttons.
2. Press the (->) key and navigate to Therapy screen.
3. Press and HOLD down the (-) minus key for 5 seconds and/or until therapy data is reset to Zero.
4. Press the (->) key to scroll back to main menu, press (+) key to enter Setup or
On/Off button to exit.

The other part of your question about the "90% pressure"........
That 90% pressure indicates you're using your machine in a range of pressures, and the 90% pressure is the pressure you were at for 90% or less of the night.

Or, said another way, 90% of the night, you were at or below that pressure.

It's funny that Dreammapper gives you a 90% pressure, and Sleepyhead gives you a 95% pressure.

However, they mean essentially the same thing. Your pressure was under the stated number for 90% (or 95%) of the time.

Respironics (or Philips/Respironics) uses 90%.

ResMed uses 95%.

Sleepyhead MAY use the ResMed pressure by default.
I THINK it may be able to be changed in the SH parameters, but I can't swear to that.

SleepyHead uses 95% by default but it is easily changed to 90% if a person is using Respironics equipment and want to match up with how Encore reports show the data.
It's not really a big deal either way. The definition is still the same...at or below for 90/95% of the night.
There's unlikely to be a huge difference between 90 and 95 % anyway.

Different companies often use different names/numbers to avoid riling up each others lawyers.
