Sinus drainage and sneezing

Post by kcmike » Tue Mar 14, 2017 9:17 am

I have been on CPAP for twenty years. I use a humidifier.
My nose runs all day long, but especially heavy the first hours of the day. About every other day, I experience a 2-4 minute bout of sneezing.
Any thoughts or suggestions? My ENT gave me a nasal spray but I hate using more medicine to deal with issues that might have a realistic solution.
Thanks!

When you used past cpap machines and humidity did you ever play with the humidity settings to see if humidity seemed to play a part in the unwanted nasal symptoms?

What you describe can happen with too much or too little humidity.
Of course it can also happen and not be related to the humidity but instead related to allergies or whatever.

Is it better, worse or the same with the new machine?

Try using a saline nasal spray rather than a chemical one, it may be part of the solution.

For me it's dust. Try breathing thru the cpap during the daytime when it happens to see if that clears it up. Problem is there is dust everywhere. 1 Loratadine daily helps. I'm surprised your ENT didn't suggest that.

Just make sure your filters are changed esp. the fine pollen filter.

Very true for me, continued use of steroid sprays or azelastine (anti-histamine spray) dry my nasal cavity out and suppress sinus drainage at night. Then when my sinuses are clogged, the narrowed cavity causes internal nasal valve collapse which promotes the vacuum/suction effect in the whole upper airway. Nasal irrigation 2x/day with saline spray as needed seems to help most.

I've had sinus issues for over 20 years and gone through two sinus operations. I'm perscribed sinus speays but aw you say it's kind of a pain and they taste awful. I hate waking up all congested. I do the sinus rinses/flushes and they help.

All saline nasal sprays are made of chemicals. Typically, they are composed of Disodium Phosphate, Phenylcarbinol, Monosodium Phosphate, Benzalkonium Chloride and, of course, Sodium Chloride and Dihydrogen Monoxide.

Sorry, but you are wrong. That nasal spray includes chlorine, sulfates, magnesium, calcium, potassium, sodium chloride and dihydrogen monoxide.

Just as a note of caution, your country's statistics show that at least 338 people died from the effects of dihydrogen monoxide in 2014. It's a big safety issue in the U.S. also.

This concerns me as I bought the product in good faith, could you point me to the ingredients information that you're quoting please and I'll follow it up.

The product does not mention these substances at all neither on the packaging or the listing, which reads:

Ingredients
Composition: Natural Sea Water which is filtered and made Isotonic. Sea Water: 31.82ml per 100ml Solution at physiological level. Inert Propellant: Nitrogen Propellant does not leave the can during use.

Edit: ok, I get that some of these are naturally found in sea water, but dihydrogen monoxide?

I do my own mixture for my rinses. I use non-iodized salt and baking soda. Depending upon your needs the ratio can vary some from a 1:1 to 1:3 ratios.

FYI: dihydrogen monoxide = H2O
Fun is fun, but more than a little can be mean.
