Using multiple machines, one data card?

Post by tmyers269 » Thu Mar 09, 2017 7:41 am

I have had OSA for a number of years and have always tried to diligently use the machine. I am also a pilot and have a Special issuance medical that requires I submit a sleep report that indicates I have used CPAP 6 hours or more for 75% of the days. For many years all the FAA was looking at were the previous 90 days before your medical.

I also have a Motor home and travel a good bit for work. A couple years go I put my older ResMed machine in the motor home so all I had to do was pack my good mask for a trip. My old machine does not record data at all, but I just made sure I had good records for the 90 days previous to my Medical. When my medical was due I printed out the date which showed 76% usage for the year but 95% usage for the 90 day period. My AME gave me hell about the 76% and informed me that the FAA without notice had changed from a 90 day look back to a 365 day look back.

I passed my medical and received my SI but now with the new requirements, I am dragging my S9 all over the place trying to maintain recorded use of my CPAP.

This is my question: I can find used S9 CPAP's for about $350. Is there a way I can use the same SD card for recording my CPAP usage and have a machine packed for travel or in my motor home that I simply put the SD card into?

If i cannot do that and need a matching SD card for each machine, can I somehow merge the data into one report. I do have sleepyhead software and also have the resmed software.

With the ResMed machines you are going to have to use a separate card for each machine.
No way around that. If you put a SD card on a machine that has another machine's data on it the S9 will make you erase the card before it accepts it.

Now Respironics machines...they don't care...you can switch one SD card between half a dozen machines and the machine won't care. It just writes a separate data file for each serial number.

SleepyHead doesn't care if you use multiple machines under one user profile...even if you mix brands it doesn't care. So merging from multiple SD cards isn't a problem. If your doc would accept SleepyHead report...easy to generate a report that includes usage from all machines.

ResScan also doesn't care if you use multiple ResMed machines and multiple SD cards under one profile....easy usage report that will include all the machines in one report.
I currently have 2 different ResMed machine reports in one user profile in my ResScan software....so I know it will do it.

Just to confirm what Pugsy said, for Sleepyhead and Rescan, you can read in multiple cards from Resmed machines into one patient record to produce a single report. Sleepyhead ALSO lets you read and combine in the record from an SD card from a Respironics machine 560 auto machine (I've done that when they had to swap when my first machine didn't work).

Just a note too - those cards CAN get corrupted. I had one corrupt after 1.5 years. The data was there but Resmed had to pull it - the local office could not. So, do remember to regularly pull the data into your computer so that you don't have missing data for your job! In my case, it seems that gold stuff on the end was worn away on one edge which is why it corrupted.

The ResMed machines should store 1 years worth of summary data in its internal memory...summary data includes hours of use for each night i.e...compliance data.
Even if a card goes bad and you haven't downloaded in a while...the hours of use will still be there to be put back onto a new blank SD card.
You won't have the detailed stuff but you will have hours of use available for the past 365 nights.

I was using 2 machines when I went for my DOT physical. One was a Respironics and one was a Resmed. I printed off a Sleepyhead report but also the compliance reports from ResScan and Encore. They were more familiar with the ResScan and Encore so they looked at the percentage used on those reports and added them together to get the total percentage.

Are there better traveling machines than the s9?

Depends on your criteria for "better".
