Just Curious: Do any long term CPAP users like the ramp?

Post by D.H. » Thu Feb 23, 2017 8:43 pm

I decided early that I couldn't stand it and demanded that my DME supplier disable it. I always made sure that the replacement units did not have this feature enabled.

Do any long term users like the ramp (newbies should not answer)?

Tried it for a while, didn't like it.

I think some folks with higher pressures find it useful.

Have never even tried it.
You should have been able to disable it yourself.
It's usually a feature that's (user) accessible without having to get into the clinical menu.

Didn't need the ramp, my pressure was only 15 cm., and I started using it after having a by-pass done 50 days earlier, pain what pain.

D.H., are you saying you still do not know how to set your own machine?
And you seemed so . . .
Ah, forget it!

Do you sit up nights trying to think up questions that have no relevance? How would it help anyone to know whether someone likes or dislikes ramp.
If they need it they use it...if they don't they don't. Anyone with intelligence can turn on or off the ramp in seconds.

Actually, this subject may be "good" in a way......in that new users reading the forum may not even think about how the DMEs set up their machines.
It can give them something to experiment with. Turn it off if it's on or turn it on if it's off. Some like it and some don't (although most end up turning it off at some point).

Over the past 7 years I have enjoyed using ramp.

I have mine set for 5 minutes. My minimum pressure is 9 and the ramp starts at 7.

I find the little comforts in life very satisfying...

If I remember right, the last time this subject came up many folk were offended at "the ramp is like training wheels" comment. It's strictly a comfort thang'. There were some hose heads that took offense to the comments. My opinion is that most folks don't mess with ramp. I mask up, hit the button and start relaxing. I did use ramp early on, but once I started getting used to therapy, I flipped it off.

Agree with Den that while this may be a "tired" topic it is new to newbies. Those like me who misused the ramp early on and suffered greatly could benefit from the discussion. Wonder how many who can't fall or stay asleep or feel they are suffocating need to consider if their problems are during the ramp period. Also, those who wake a lot during the night and hit the ramp to start over may be spending too much of their night at non-therapeutic pressures. Even if you have one of the newer machines that will respond and increase pressure during ramp, if it has too far to go it still may not help in a timely manner.

Been on CPAP over 10 years but still use the ramp. I think it's set to about 5 minutes starting at a pressure of 9. My only reason is I do a lot of coughing and throat clearing when I first mask up and I don't want that mess factored into my data. Ramp is an optional and self-adjustable comfort feature. Use it if you need or want it, just do it with knowledge. No shame in using it, no glory in not. Truely personal preference.

Use of the ramp has probably hurt the treatment of many more people than it has helped, due to it it being set to low from the get go, starving patients of needed air. Nothing like not getting enough air to scare you out of XPAP treatment, Then add 4 cm to 20 cm APAP range, you can almost guarantee failure. Jim

That's why users need to take control of their therapy as soon as possible.
"Get smart quick!"

Nobody will care as much about YOUR therapy as YOU will.
Get data-capable machines, use software, get the mask that works/feels/fits the best, etc., etc., etc.

DMEs (and doctors) who don't know what they're doing or don't care can hinder the user getting proper therapy.
