First night with CPAP

Post by EdNerd » Sat Feb 11, 2017 8:55 pm

Last night was my first night with my CPAP machine.
Slight red ring around my mouth, strap lines on my cheeks. They faded fairly quick.
Raw spot on my left nostril. We'll see what develops there.

Didn't feel gloriously refreshed this morning. But not frazzled either.
About 8 hours of decent sleep - don't think I woke up at all.

Tried to get my data for Sleepy Head - no card in the machine?!?
So I put one in for tonight. We'll see if I can get it posted tomorrow.

The real test will be next week during work.
Normal is 6-ish hours of sleep a night.

Ed

Congrats on getting off to a good start. You might want to use a mask liner to prevent the spot from turning into something nasty. Strap covers can help with red lines too. A forum member sells them under the brand PadACheek. Or if you are particularly handy, fashion something temporary to serve the same purpose. Good luck going forward.

After the second night, I am SO DONE with that mask!!
Squirting air leaks in odd places, some into my eyeballs.
If I get the mask to seal and stay perfectly still, all is good.
And then I fall asleep and all bets are off!!

Gonna hit up the DME first thing in the morning for a different mask.

I didn't fair too well with the View either. You might try the Resdmed Airfit F20. I find it to be a very comfortable FFM, and the seal is excellent on it.

You could also try a liner (although it's hard to make a good liner for the View), but in my experience so far they reduce serious leaks but actually increase average leaking. Essentially, you're leaking at a relatively low constant level all night long, but you don't notice it as much because it sort of acts as a local diffuser. You do notice the evaporative cooling all around the mask, but it's not a big deal. Overall it's worth a try, because what's important about leaking is that it doesn't wake you. A low constant level is not a big deal for the therapy.

I always soak the face piece in 50% vinegar for about two hours before the first use. This cuts down on the allergic properties of the plastic.

I tried the F20, and it was indeed very comfortable. But it was just a touch too wide at the nose bridge and was into my eye sockets. The F10 was a much better fit. Had my first night with it last night and it worked fine.

Good deal. I presume they tried a smaller size on you for the F20? I use medium in it, whereas I use a large in other FFM that I've tried. Anyway, F10 should be quite nice as well.

While I'm hear, I'll make a pitch for also trying a nasal mask at some point in the future, even if you're a mouth breather. I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to do a nasal mask as I'd mouth breathed at night pretty much my whole life. I tried a nasal mask anyway, with a chin strap, and found it worked very well. For me, with the chin strap keeping my mouth more or less closed my tongue sort of just naturally sticks up near the roof of my mouth when the air is on, preventing any sort of leaks. I can even slightly open my lips and I still have a seal. It's opened up a new world of masks that's I'm now trying, nearly all of them more comfortable than a FFM. It may not work for you, but worth a trial I think, for the relatively low cost in doing so.
