machine turned off on its own last night
I woke up struggling to breath and noticed that my Resmed S9 had turned off.
Only the second night or third night with new machine and had a problem.
Wondering if I am going to have to take it back.
Any thoughts folks?

Re: machine turned off on its own last night
Check your software to see if you had a big leak at the time it turned itself off.
Check the machine settings to see if SmartStart is enabled or not.
I assume no loss of electricity otherwise last night??? Microwave clock not blinking and all that??
Any chance of cat or other pet sitting on the machine (I have had that one happen to me).
If there is no reasonable explanation...then alert who you got the machine from.
I have no idea if you need to take it back though. My crystal ball isn't working so good.
It wouldn't be impossible for there to be some sort of sensor issue with the SmartStart sensing mechanism. While it's not a common problem...it isn't totally impossible.

I'm set up yet to see if there was a big leak and I don't remember what time it happened.
No power failure.
No pet.
Going to see if it happens again and try to have instrumentation when it does.
the leak stat on the panel said 26 liters per minute.
It typically says a number in the 20's not sure what it means but I seem to sleep ok and I wake feeling ok.
Maybe I should pay more attention to the leak.
I think I am always slightly awake and readjust my nasal pillows when they make noise.
Is that how it is for everyone?

It it happens again I would disable Smartstart and see if the problem goes away.Jack Burton wrote: Smartstart is enabled.
I read a post from jimw159 that his ResMed AS10 AutoSet had the same problem and isolated it to the smartstart.

Re: machine turned off on its own last night
You need to understand what you are seeing on the LCD display...that's a 95% leak number which means for 95% of the time it was at or below that number and 5% of the time it was above that number. We can't tell just by that 95% number just how big the leak was and it might have been big enough that the machine thought you were no longer attached to the mask and when that happens the machine will turn off when SmartStart is enabled. SmartStart not only starts the machine with a couple of breaths...it also means it will turn off rather quickly if it doesn't think you are on the other end.Jack Burton wrote:the leak stat on the panel said 26 liters per minute.
So that is one possible explanation...if you will use the software you can see when the machine turned itself off and evaluate the leak that may or may not have been present right before the machine turned itself off.
When the machine turns off...it's easy to spot on the software reports but impossible to judge with just looking at the LCD data.
If it happens often (turning off by itself) and there is no big leak spotted on the software report then you might try turning SmartStart off for a few nights and manually turn the machine on and off. If that fixes things then maybe it's related to the sensor.
The fact that your 95% number is as high as it is...means there were so pretty good sized leaks going on and it wouldn't be impossible for the machine to simply have not been able to sense you were on the other end due to a big leak.
I am not sure exactly where the leak needs to be for the machine to decide you are no longer attached...maybe up around 40 L/min but I can't swear to it. Seems like I read it somewhere but I can't remember for sure.
You will need to be using the software detailed leak reports though...and you should if you are consistently seeing 95% numbers in the 20s...just to make sure that you aren't spending a lot of time in big leaks to the point it is harming your therapy.
Brief short lived leaks aren't that big of a deal but you want to make sure that they aren't more than just "brief".

I will have to compile sleepyhead as I on Linux.
That will have to wait until the current tidal wave of stuff to handle is passed.
I can always go back to my previous s9 which never to my knowledge turned off.
It was also configured for smartstart.
Re: machine turned off on its own last night
While it looks like leaks are a good possibility, what are your pressure settings? Did you recently change to the P10 and not change the mask type? With nasal pillows ResMed states to turn off SmartStart with 7cm or lower pressures. And if the mask setting isn't correct the machine may not be sensing correctly. Since it will take awhile for more data, I would just turn SmartStart off. It's only a push of a button to start and stop.

Re: machine turned off on its own last night
Somebody else reported the same problem with a Dream Station. I suggested that the problem might be the auto/off problems (you remove the mask, the machine goes off automatically). It may wrongly sense that you're removed the mask. Just disable that feature and turn it off manually. In some machines you may also need to disable the auto/on to disable the auto/off, as they might not be separate.

Prescription is 10-20 I have had the nasal pillows for a while.OkyDoky wrote:While it looks like leaks are a good possibility, what are your pressure settings? The difference might be that the old machine was set for a nasal mask.
I am going to keep the machine as configured to see if If happens again.
Hopefully I will have sleepyhead up and running when it does.
Going to compare the settings between my old and new S9s.
UPDATE:
old machine set to nasal
new machine set to pillows
will work on getting the leak down

Re: machine turned off on its own last night
The machine turned itself off again once more.
Things I have done...
Installed sleepyhead still learning how to interpret the data.
Changed EPR from off to 3cm h20 to match the old machine.
Monitored leak rate via the panel leak statistic(liters per minute).
Nasal pillows typically in the 20's and in the 40's one night.
Nasal mask 13 last night.
The mask was much more comfortable than I remember.
Will use the nasal mask primarily until I figure this out.
I feel kind of foggy this morning.

UPDATE:
I switched back to my nasal mask and the machine has not turned off since.
Now that I have some data to compare the leak rate with nasal pillows seems to be the culprit.
Too bad, I really liked the nasal pillows.

Turn off the smart start. When I said in previous posts my S9 "crapped out" ... that's what it was doing... stopping in the middle of the night. I never used smart start. Turn off the smart start and see if it stops.

I use nasal pillows all the time with my S9 and it never has turned off.
If you prefer the nasal pillows...there's something weird going on for it to turn itself off just with the nasal pillows....maybe you could get it sorted out so you could use the nasal pillows if you like them better.
