Airfit P10 - I want to like it but ...

Post by frapilu » Fri Dec 23, 2016 10:40 am

I tried an Airfit P10 for the first time last night. I REALLY want to like it and switch to this but it so noisy! I heard every single breath I took whooshing in and out. Please tell me I did something wrong that I can correct?

At 2 am I gave up and out my full face Quattro Air for Her back on and slept peacefully and quietly. I have used a full face for years but I'm pretty sure I've settled down on the mouth breathing now that I can breathe through my nose better (had surgery for deviated septum a while back).

My pressure was at 11-20 but it looks like I was mostly at 11-12. My AHI and everything were good but I feel like I hardly slept listening to that whooshing noise.

I wonder if you were hearing conducted noise through the hose and mask because the P10 venting system is essentially silent.
Try this experiment today while awake...put the P10 on and start the machine and plug your fingers into your ears. If you still hear the inhale/exhale whooshing sound then it is conducted noise and that can be a bit difficult to eliminate. Hose cozy might help....and you could wrap the hose with something just to try it out before going to the trouble and expense of buying a hose cozy.

I hear the conducted noise sometimes...and sometimes I don't. When I do hear it I find it is just as loud (or louder with my fingers in my ears) and I think that when I don't it's because I have learned to tune it out. When conducted noise is tuned out the P10 is silent.

So first thing to do is to try to determine if what you are heating is conducted noise or not.

My P10 makes a similar noise when it leaked because it was on upside down.

Thanks Pugsy. I'll try that. if it's conducted noise, hopefully I'll learn to get used to it. I want to be able to move to this mask.

Thanks bonjour. I did check that just in case but it was fine. I tried moving to a larger size (I was fitted with xsmall so tried small) but I looked like a piggy face so moved back to xsmall.

Like Pugsy, I find the AirFit P10 to be close to silent. I sometimes need to check if the cpap is on or not by putting my fingers against the vent holes.

But we are all different with different sensitivities and different abilities to hear sounds in certain frequency ranges. Pugsy's advice is great about how to pin it down more precisely. But you may find that you get used to it pretty quickly. In fact, that may be exactly what happened to those of us who say we don't hear any noise from the P10!

In extreme cases, there is at least one "muffler" that goes in the air hose to the mask. But anything that modifies or disrupts the cpap airflow can also impact the effectiveness of the therapy, so I would only advise looking into something like that as a last resort.

Have you tried our frequently advised method of using your machine and mask while you are awake and doing something distracting - like watching a movie or surfing the internet? It may allow your brain to get used to the normal "noise" of cpap use and start to tune it out and ignore it.

Hi yaconsult,
I've been using cpap for 13 years now so I'm pretty used to it. It's just that this P10 is new to me, in fact pillows are new to me. I suppose I could try playing with my iPad with the pillows mask connected. We do not have, nor do we want, a tv in the bedroom and I really don't want to move the cpap to the living room downstairs although I will do it if necessary. But I really hope to get used to this mask without having to go to that. I haven't tried Pugsy's suggestion yet since I haven't gone back upstairs lately.

I don't think my pressure of around 11-12 is too high for this?
Thanks
France

I'm sitting here in bed, playing with my iPad, plugged into the P10 with my cpap on. I plugged my ears and still hear the whooshing, possibly even louder then when my ears aren't plugged, kind of like what I'm hearing when laying down. Ok. Guess it's conducted noise so I'll just have to get used to it. We get used to other stuff with cpap so I'll manage this.

Thanks
France

Your pressure is not too high for the P10. Mine is IPAP15 and EPAP11. One thing you might check is, if you washed the pillows sometimes the inner cone becomes inverted and makes noise when you breathe. Just work the inner cone back where it is pointed in the same direction as the outside one.

The AirFit P10 is fine with those pressures. I have my minimum pressure set to 13 and I have seen the maximum hit 18 or 19, so the mask can definitely handle it.

But you didn't get the same conducted noise with other masks? Were they nasal or full face masks?

Mine is very quiet, in fact I sometimes check to make sure the air is blowing out the exhaust holes because it's so quiet. But I did find I had to go up a size on the nasal pillow. My main problem with it is the air blows on my lips and gives me chapped lips, so I alternate with the fx.

It's brand new so I haven't washed it yet - I still have it on trial. But I checked just in case and that's not the case.

Thanks

I've never had that before but then again, I've always used a full face before. I went back to my Quattro Air for Her for Christmas because I wanted to get some sleep. Now I've put a hose cover on it like Pugsy suggested and I still hear it. I know it's just my breathing amplified somehow but it sounds so loud! I'll try to ignore or, or try to convince myself that it's white noise or try to use it as a sort of meditation tonight. I want to get used to it.

Thanks
