chin strap and tape no longer working

Post by baseten » Sun Dec 04, 2016 9:35 pm

My pressure setting is 13-15. I am a petite female and have had to use the Resmed P10 mask because I cannot get a good seal with full face masks.

I have used the P10 for a year along with the basic Respironics chin strap to keep my tongue in the right place and my mouth from opening. I also tape my mouth shut to prevent any small leaks. This has been effective until recently, even with a new chinstrap. I'm getting chipmunk cheeks, and my mouth is opening slightly, even when I tighten the chin strap. If I tighten it too much, I get a bad headache.

I have also tried the Resmed Premium chin strap and the Puresom classic chin strap, the latter which irritates my skin.

I have two questions:

1. Would an oral devise in conjunction with the nasal pillows eliminate the need for taping and the chin strap, yet keep my tongue in place?

2. As a second option, is there a full face mask for a petite face? I really like the Resmed F10, but it will not keep the seal when my head relaxes and lowers slightly, and that's before I fall asleep and my jaw drops.

Thanks for your help.

1. I wouldn't think the oral appliance would eliminate the need for tape or strap. I use tape and a neckbrace
The neckbrace eliminates the need for the chin strap. At one point years ago I had an oral appliance, tape and a chinstrap. I use durapore tape from walmart. I still get chipmunk cheeks occasionally, and maybe more that I realize if it happens when I'm asleep.

2.. Maybe an oral device and a petite face mask? I've been contemplating this to keep my jaw in place with the full face mask. I suspect I still might need the neckbrace.

Chin up strips were the only thing that worked for me.
(Except for Poli Grip strips) eeeew! messy!
No full face mask made is compatible with my adorable face--
--their problem; not mine.

I fought this battle starting 1st with the chin strap, I had a fixed bridge the 3 missing teeth attached to the adjacent 3 teeth, I tighten the chin strap so tight it killed the nerves in the teeth, I bite into something an sheared them off at the gum line. I now have a precession bridge which I have to remove at night.

I tried the light adhesive painters tape made in China there’s no telling what was in the adhesive, they changed the adhesive which had a strong odor, to scary, scrapped that idea.

Next I tried the 3M Micropore which I bought online in boxes of 12 for under a dollar a roll. The problem, it took a little skin when removed, it was too messy soaking it off with warm soapy water.

Next it was 3M Nexcare sensitive skin, pain-free removal, worked as advertised but had a tendency to come loose so I I overlapped the edges just a hair with the Micropore which worked if carefully applied, without loss of skin. Each night I use a new piece of Nexcare over my lips and apply previous used pieces on either side, remove it and reapply in sequence. The Micropore is cheap and comes with 10yd to a roll; discard that, Nexcare not so cheap.

Underlying problem is the tape is hypoallergenic and BREATHABLE; this is where the Poligrip denture strips come in, turn off the heat and just use air over the water, the heat will soften and blow out the strips. The strips 2 to a pack are a little too wide; to contain them within the lips narrow those with a razor blade, with the lips and finger dry wet strips under warm water, one from each side overlapping in the center and now you should look like Bugs Bunny. In the morning take a wet piece of tissue and it will, with practice come off with one swipe.

The chin strap purpose now is to protect the tape from becoming disturbed in your sleep.
As a male I have to shave and apply Equate Anti-wrinkle cream just prior to applying the tape. The cream make removal of the tape easier and the marks from the head gear disappear quicker.

You will now be wide awake so do it in advance or take a sleeping pill. I wake up in the morning my mouth moist and sweet, tongue pink, plaque is all most nonexistent.
A pain in the azz but it works 100% of the time.

Note that NexCare *is* 3M Micropore tape - it's in the fine print on the front or back of the package. There are two major varieties of Micropore tape - one is paper and the other is cloth/fabric. I much prefer the paper variety as it is more breathable. The other one feels greasy and slimy to me. The NexCare paper tape from Walmart is cheap and the same thing as the 3M Micropore paper tape available from Amazon and other dealers.

Some store brands of tape have an odor that is off-putting.
Appropriate for anywhere far away from the nose. Avoid.
